Now, at 23, Flowers is giving up a baseball career in the Cubs' organization and will enroll next month at Illinois, where he will join the football team.

''It was a tough decision, but I feel real good about being able to help what coach [Ron] Zook is building down there,'' Flowers said. ''And it's a chance to get home.''

The Cubs acquired Flowers in 2005 from the Detroit Tigers in the Kyle Farnsworth trade. The Tigers had drafted Flowers in the fifth round in '02.

He was paid for the play in the minors, correct? So how is he eligible to play college football?

You can be professional in one sport and play college ball in another sport as long as you didn't take endorsement money. That's the same reason that Jeff Samardizja was able to pitch for the Cubs this summer and play college football this fall, but Jeremy Bloom was not able to play college football because he took endorsement money to fund his skiing career.

Bo Flowers wasn't in the Cubs organization last year, he played for the Windy City Thunderbolts as well as the Rockford Riverhawks of the Frontier League last year.

Both are, he was released by Windy City and then picked up by Rockford later on. The Frontier League probably has the same skill level as Short-Season or maybe a bad Low-A player.
