Tip o' the hat to the D'Backs. Estrada is greatly overrated and is nothing more than a singles hitter with no speed and a weak glove.

The Brewers traded their only reliable starter!?

Huh?

Sheets, Capuano, Bush, Villenuva, Vargas is still pretty good.

It leaves the Brewers with just two guys who started 30 or more times last year. I guess only reliable starter was an exaggeration, but it does weaken their pitching staff. The next highest was Sheets with 17 starts.

Yeah, but Davis was probably going to be the odd man out after this season anyway. They just have too many young starting pitchers not far away from the majors.

Davis is a FA after this year.

Thats what I mean. He's not in the plans beyond this season. They have too many replacments coming up.

Capuano threw over 220 innings this last year, and was over 200 in '05 as well. Bush was also over 200 with more than 30 starts. Davis was third on their team in innings last year.

I agree on Estrada...He's 30 years old now, so he's likely peaked. His walk rate has dropped sharply since 2004, indicating his approach or patience has worstened. Anyone batting over .300 should have an OBP over .350, IMO. Good move by the DBacks, I think Milwaukee could have done better.

Villenueva also threw over 180 innings between the Brewers and minors.

His ERA was close to 5 last year.

But I believe he punked us more than once last year. Sounds like a win for the Cubs.

Davis was terrible last year. I view Davis and Vargas as a wash, especially since Davis would be gone following this year.

Eveland is a decent prospect. Had a great year at AAA, but struggled with the Brewers. Not too hard to give him up though with plenty of pitching prospects almost ready.

Krynzel is basically done. He was a good prospect 3 years ago, but has gone down hill fast.

So, Davis = Vargas

Aquino > Eveland (as far as their time in the bigs)

Estrada >>>>> Krynzel. This allows Miller more time off and there wont be an automatic out at the catcher spot for 60 games or so.

Brewers win this one

More like Miller won't be an automatic out at the catcher spot for 60 games or so that Estrada doesn't start. Miller's skills are on a decline so I don't see any reason the Brewers would not be getting Estrada in order to push Miller to a bench role.

The majority of catchers peak a year or two later than position players, they also wear down faster assuming they catch full time in the majors. Estrada hasn't been overused so I'd expect his 29-32 age years to be his peak seasons. I'm guessing he's a .760-.800 OPS type C. I don't like him that much but I think Davis has seen his best days and Vargas will improve a lot away from arizona where he pitched terribly in his career.

5.60 ERA home vs 4.12 ERA road in 2006

5.99 ERA home vs 4.38 ERA road in 2005

I'm gonna guess this either ends up as one of those deals that helps both teams or Davis ends up being a dud again this year and the Brewers come out on top.

i'm so happy that i'll never have to watch Krynzel try to play baseball ever again...he was pathetic and quite the meathead....i must say that it isn't going to be the same at sounds games now that i can't heckle him.

I just heard Brewers GM Doug Melvin on 1250 in Milwaukee. Melvin was asked about the 4 year $48 Million he offered Carlos Lee in July, and if he still has that money available. Melvin answered that he has an offer of that much on the table to a current free agent.

I would guess it is an attempt at Schmidt that will come up short, but interesting that Melvin is at least claiming he has some cash to play with in Milwaukee.
