There are also plenty of incentives for the five-time All-Star, who will be the Cubs leadoff hitter. He gets $250,000 for collecting most All Star votes, $350,000 if he is selected the World Series MVP, $250,000 for the league championship series MVP, $300,000 for the MVP award and $75,000 for a Gold Glove.

hahaha, why'd they even bother putting this in the contract???

Odd that he gets more for being the World Series MVP (better than 50 players over 4-7 games) than the reg. season MVP (better than 600 players over 162 games). Oh well, I'd be happy with either :)

good move for the Cubs. They've had MVPs in the not-so-distant past (Sosa, Dawson, Sandberg), and if Soriano were to improve on last season, it wouldn't be out of the question. On the other hand, if he plays eight years in a Cub uniform, there's no chance that he'll play in a World Series.

I was really hoping at least 2 of the years would be option years, but hey you can always trade him.

He has no-trade protection. It's possible that he might agree to a trade later on if the Cobs aren't especially competitive, but I doubt teams would be all that interested. I don't expect Soriano to be worth his contract in dollars or years.

Only if he agrees to it.

What if we spread some rumors about him leaving early? That pique your interest?

He'll agree if the fans/media bad-mouth him about leaving a game early and demand that he be traded to the O's for a backup 2B/OF and a couple of relievers.

Hmm... We might be able to work something out. Tell me, are you in the market for a fragile middle-infielder coming off a career year?

Yep, none. Absolutely no chance in the next eight years. None. Zip. No chance. Not even a little. How many other ways can I say this? This is fun! The Cubs have no chance to win....ever! Weeeeee! Not even a slightest sliver of a glimmer of hope of a World Series victory. You look at this album cover and you have to ask yourself how much more black could this be and the answer is none. None more black. Just to reiterate, in case I wasn't clear in my earlier comments, no hope.

Glad that's been straightened out.

Get over it. Seriously.

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet.

Per Bruce at Daily Herald:

The Cubs want to make sure their $136 million investment is in one piece come spring, so they’re saying no to winter ball for Alfonso Soriano.

The bottom line is that Soriano’s side says it’s OK if the player sits out this winter.

The Cubs don't want Alfonso Soriano playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic.

Soriano just signed on for eight years of October-less baseball, so it's understandable that he'd want some December action to make up for it. Still, the Cubs don't want him to risk an injury. "I told him I would prefer he not play," GM Jim Hendry said. "And he was agreeable to that."

The Cubs made the playoffs 4 times in the last 22 seasons, and that was during a time when they were typically in the top 10-12 in payroll, they'd have to go 11 straight without the playoffs in order for Soriano to never see October baseball in Wrigley. That's doubtful in the wild card era, especially with what looks like a top 5 payroll. Even Hendry wouldn't do that.

seemed like an unneccessary jab by Rotoworld for sure

Let's hope he doesn't take that as a dare.

Be a heck of a challenge for him to keep his job for 8 more years with no playoff appearances
