Don't know if it's been brought up yet, but if the Cubs plan on having Soriano play CF, does this make Pie expendable? Does he go in a trade to get a pitcher or another big-time bat?

Why not develop Pie as a corner guy?

Why not shift Soriano when Pie is ready?

Murton?

Our very own Mr. Miles is reporting that Soriano will play RF, with Jacque possibly moving to CF.

Wha?

Considering Bruce has pretty good access to Hendry, that's interesting. RF is the toughest OF spot in Wrigley.

Trade him and others to Florida for Cabrera.

Pie isn't going to net Cabrera. It's going to take an elite prospect to land him and then some. Pie is by no means "elite."

I think Murton, Pie, Hill and 1 top pitching prospects like Veal would do it.

no, please be wrong. soriano is a lot more valuable in center than right.

SORINAO HAS TO HIT LEADOFF.

I'm sorry for the shouting, but this is something that really nobody can be unsure about. I definitely wanted him deeper in the lineup and was baffled as to why Washington was keeping at #1...until I looked at his career numbers.

I guess it's a mental thing, but the guy produces when he's hitting leadoff. When he's not, he's not, period. He HAS to hit leadoff for the Cubs if you want him to be anything offensively worth his salary.

His wonderful leadoff #s are because he hit leadoff last year. Look at his leadoff splits before last year. If he batted 9th last year his career numbers would look like he should bat 9th because he was most effective there.

Wow...I like the fact that this team signed Soriano. They got the big bat they needed. Problem is, 8/$135m is crazy.

Let's hope that there are option years on that deal, otherwise this contract will be dicey in a few years once his production begins dropping off.

At least in 6 years market inflation will make this deal look less insane. :D

Has market inflation made ARod's deal look good?

Personally, I never thought ARod's deal looked that bad, considering he was a SS at the time. I think ARod is still a very special player.

you just blew my mind

Izturis + Pie for Manny?

Were you referring to my post?

If so, and I have discussed this several times in other threads, a Manny trade is contingent on the Sox signing Drew and wanting added payroll flexibility. If so, assuming Manny's salary is a big chip in the baragain. Add a defensive minded starting SS (Epstein loves these) and you may have a deal.

I would of been perfectly content with 7/119 so adding another year doesnt make me ill. For the Cubs to outbid teams they needed to add length. Soriano is an amazing talent. I really think his OBP increase wasnt an abberation last year. His SO's increased but i dont really care since he walked more. Having him leadoff and play CF is what i like. This maybe a screwed up way at looking at the $17M but with Murton making bare minums and later to be cheap arby years, its easier to overpay for a CF like Soriano. I wasnt as excited if they had him in LF and still went out and paid a lot for a FA CF.

I don't understand this. Unless Hendry believes that Soriano will produce something closer to 2006 than to his career numbers, and that seems unlikely, Soriano has very little value as a RF. His career numbers look good from CF, but nothing special from CF. There's no way a RF should get that contract to put up Soriano's numbers.

Soriano in right?

That would make Soriano's production probably a little above average in right, and make Jacque's production much better in center. I'm not sure why we're putting a bad defensive player in center and a decent one in right though.

i might have ripped off the deal from you. but the thought just now occured to me that pie is now expendable (assuming soriano plays center), and we can get manny for cheap with just 2 players.

smoke screen on the jones to center thing- he's gonna be moved for pitching( with bullpen arm)- I just dont think Hendry wants him- we'll see- i must say i will not be surprised by anything else this offseason-

- What are the chances he'll play 2B? Infield of Lee, Barrett, Soriano, Ramirez...

- If outfield, shouldnt he play LF? Isnt that what he played in Washington?

- Where does he rank in terms of $$$/year? Is it right behind A-Rod?

Do you really think that would be a good idea? How long will it be before Cabrera is demanding $20 million/year? Opposed to Pie?

I say get someone who can teach Pie some plate discipline, or trade him for a like prospect (pitching).

who the hell cares? it's the same exact players. what does 'value at his position' mean in that case? do you just want the best sabr stats for purely aesthetic reasons?

if Jock in center and Soriano in right is the best defense, that's the way it sould be.

No prob - I totally agree. I would allow Drew to sign with Boston and be first in line to make a deal with Manny. We have exactly the chips they need, assuming JH will eat the vast majority of the contract.

I'm told he's here to play right field and definitely NOT center. Murton is said to be "safe" in LF. The plan now is to put Jones in CF and say good luck and godspeed to Juan Pierre. Now if you can trade Jones...
