The funny this is....Frank has never made more then $10 million in a season before this contract.

He has only himself and his agent to blame for that one. His deal with the White Sox was long in years and short in cash.

And he had to go to another country to get it.

Shouldn't this money go towards resigning Vernon Wells?

Although its becoming cliche, Wells will demand Beltran type money...meaning a lot more money for a lot longer...really its apples and oranges in comparison to Frank. Also, I'm sure Riccardi will take a Beane approach here and keep Wells if they have a good chance at the playoffs, dish him at the break/deadline if they don't. Selling GMs have a very leveraged position at that time because the demand much outweighs the supply not only in terms of volume, but also desperation. If he were to trade Wells this offseason, the acquiring team would require him to sign and extension, and he would say he wants Beltan money. And any team could just sign Soriano and not have to give up any talent in return. So inversely, at this juncture, Riccardi is the one without the leverage.

Good point. I wonder if this means a trade is imminent...although the Jays have spent quite a lot the last couple years on free agents in an effort to make the AL East more competitive.

It's hard to believe that, with just two quality starters on their roster and hardly as much financial flexibility as last year, the Jays are going to spend at least $7 million-$8 million per year on a DH. Maybe it's a sign that they're going to move Vernon Wells for pitching. Otherwise, they're also blocking Adam Lind. If Wells is dealt, Reed Johnson could go to center and Lind could play left.
