I never realized the great OBP that Drew has had over his career. His career average is .390 and he has had a bunch of years over .400. Jones only had on OBP is .330 last year. That's 70 points. So what do you do with Jacque? 4th outfielder?

Jacque can be traded to a team who misses out on a corner OF on the FA market later in the offseason. As I stated in the other thread, compared to other RFs, he was surpisingly very productive and is signed to a very cheap short term contract. He has some value.

Trade him to Oakland.

I meant he has some value to stupid GMs who don't have a hope of winning. Sorry for being unclear. A's should go with Swisher, Kotsay, Bradley in the OF, using Johnson at first.

I gotta say something when someone says take your chances with the pitching

well, when "take your chances with pitching" means zambrano, hill, prior, miller, prospects, and a solid bullpen, i'm willing to do it.

when "take your chances with pitching" means the reds, i'm not.

Drew prefers CF. I'd sign him to play that.

If the Cubs still want Sheffield, a Murton/Drew/Sheffield OF isn't that bad.

Isn't that bad? It would be one of the best offensive OFs in baseball assuming Sheffield's production doesn't drop off the face of the earth and those guys don't get injured anymore than their average.

Can Soriano play RF?

Why not put him at 2nd? He'd probably be happier there. Second base is a harder hole to fill than the OF. Keep Murton in left, move Soriano to 2nd, and get another bat for the OF (Lee?).

good idea, let's sign every top free agent

Ok, smartasses aside.....

We can afford it. It probably won't happen, seeing as this is the Cubs, and Jim Hendry is in charge, but it's fun to talk about.

Besides, say Pie has a phenomenal spring and Murton is hitting. Then you have a logjam in the OF with Pie, Murt, Drew, Jones, and Soriano. If you move Soriano to 2nd, you can throw Pie in there and ditch Jones or trade Murton for pitching.

i was just giving you a hard time. how expensive would soriano, drew, lee AND ramirez be? i honestly don't know. sign those four, and maybe we'll just take our chances pitching-wise.

Soriano, Drew, Ramirez, and maybe we could take a chance on a lesser FA or pull off a trade? What about Frank Catalonatto?

Problem is that Beane has been having a love affair with OBP that has resulted in many illegitimate playoff runs (I really don't know what that means). Jones=bad OBP.

yeah, what a failure all those division championships with a 50 mil payroll have been. obp....yuck!

Hill is young and unproven. A 4th of 5th starter? Sure. Prior and Miller havent pitched a full season in two years. Prospects - well did any impress you at the end of last year?

He certainly did the best with what he had. I was meaning to say that Beane is pretty darn good. If he had 100 million, he would have had a championship or two by now.

you really think we're picking up 3 new starters to push hill all the way back to 5, and the rest to bonus? i'd be pretty shocked if that happened even if we didn't sign any of those guys on offense.

No don't take your chances pitching wise. Pitching wins championships. Ask the Yankess what happened to them a few weeks ago.

fortunately weaver and suppan are both FA's. i'm assuming you'd want to sign them both.

Not three starters. But one upper tier FA pitcher is needed.

About 58M (half of our projected payroll)

I completely agree with you. Pitching wins championships.

So does hitting.

Don't even start that garbage (the arguing over who's philosophy is right and who's is wrong) again.

I never said that. I was only referring to the post that said the Cubs don't have to worry about pitching if they have the hitters they want. I would like a balanced club, but if it had to sway one way I would rather be pitching-heavy.

doesn't sound like la is too anxious to re-sign drew...

Drew's agent, Scott Boras, said the move was a "business decision" and that Drew would like to discuss a new contract with the Dodgers.

Colletti said there was no request for a contract extension and sounded as if he had no desire to retain Drew.

"He moved on and we'll move on," he said. "We'll find a player who wants to stay here. Scott broached [the opt-out] and I said if that's what you decide to do ... I'm finished with it.

"In light of what J.D. said at the end of the year, about making a commitment and how much he loved playing here, I was surprised. J.D.'s a man of his word. I guess he changed his word. I think you expect things to be handled in a certain way. Based on what was written at the end of the season, you have to ask yourself, 'How did this happen?'"
