Major-league sources told the San Diego Union-Tribune on Wednesday that the Padres have decided to hire Los Angeles Angels pitching coach Bud Black as their new manager.

Black will replace Bruce Bochy, who managed the Padres to consecutive NL West titles for the first time in club history. Bochy had a year left on his Padres contract but accepted a three-year deal with San Francisco late last month.

A baseball source told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick that the Padres will make the hiring official on Thursday.

Jim Rome just made a funny comment on the hiring. He was basically debating the Padres position and had this to say: "Hmm, let's see... should we hire Bud Black or bring in Dusty Baker to shred Peavy's arm with pitch counts of 140 every outing?"

Hammer, meet nail.

did he follow that up with 30 seconds of silence, which was then followed by him saying the exact same thing but worded slightly differently, which was followed by 30 more seconds of silence?

I hate the long pauses from Rome. A lot of times he has some interesting points to make, but in the end I can't listen to the guy.

i was hoping he'd go to oakland

i guess the a's are just going to end up with geren like everyone always assumed they would, but if they're going to to do that, i don't know why they're waiting so long.

This might ruin my idea of trading Barrett for Wells, then going out and signing Bengie Molina. I think Bengie will be going to San Diego.

It was a bad idea to begin with.

Better than going out and signing a 41 year old, steriod popping, freak.

Doubtful.

156 OPS+ is damn good no matter how old you are. Coincidentally, Wells has never come close to that. Maybe he should ask Barry for some HGH.

Molina's best OPS+ was 110.

Barrett posted a 121 last season. Trading away Barrett for Wells and then spending on Molina doesn't improve the team.

Adding Bonds and his 150 or better OPS+ does.

There's no way I would take Bonds, period. The guy can still hit, but he is awful in the field and he can't even play three games in a row now. He can hardly play two games in a row as it is. He is one of the best hitters of all-time, steroids or non-steroids, but to me, it's not worth the risk of paying a bunch of money for a guy that will give you a ton of baggage.

Just say no to Bonds.

Agreed.

Basically, you would be paying 10 Million for a platoon player. That doesn't make much sense to me. 10 Million for a platoon player? I think the money can be spent on a SP. Murton doesn't need a platoon partner. He is going to have a great year in 07.

And while there may be better ideas than signing Bonds, it's still a better idea than trading Barrett for Wells.
