According to his agent, first baseman Julio Zuleta may be planning on returning to the U.S. after becoming a free agent on Nov. 30.

Zuleta, a former Cubs prospect, was playing in Triple-A with the Red Sox before leaving for Japan in June 2003. He's since hit .291/.378/.568 with 122 homers in 1,596 at-bats with the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks. His best season came in 2005, when he batted .319 with 43 homers. It seems unlikely that there will be a lot of interest in him as a first baseman or a DH in MLB, but perhaps some team would take a chance. He'd almost certainly make more money by staying in Japan.

I shall always remember his voodoo he performed on the team's bats a few years back prior to a 8 (?) game win streak.

Actually, I believe it was a 12 game winning streak that followed an 8 game losing streak.

I thought it was a 10 gamer...but whatever. I remember how it ended, and that sucks. Jeromy Burnitz hit a towering flyball to right, Sammy leapt at the wall and it just went over his glove for a HR. Ugh.

If I'm not mistaken, that is.

That's precisely what happened in 2001. In fact, the 12-game win streak came IMMEDIATELY after the 8-game losing streak (the first game after the losing streak was the start of the winning streak).

Well, you have it a little turned around. It was a 12 gamer, and it was Sammy who hit a high fly into the corner in right for the potential game tying homerun, and in the corner Burnitz jumped up and robbed him to end the game.

Ah, that's right. I was thinking it was a righty who hit the flyball, but I couldn't place who because I was thinking walk off. The only two guys I could think of were Jenkins and Burnitz, and I remember Burnitz being in one the play.

Thank you for the correction.

IIRC the game that kicked off that losing streak, was the one against the Cards when Mueller busted his knee on the tarp roll.

Nope. The last game of the losing streak was a 4-0 loss to the D'Backs and I believe it was a t Wrigley. The series you are prolly thinking about was the weekend (May 11-13) before the 12 gamer, when Mueller got his injury

That was also the same month the Cubs kicked the holy dog-doody out of the Dodgers, 20-1.

Another Julio Zuleta sighting!

This one from FoxSports.com.

Finally, the Orioles, Blue Jays and Devil Rays might want to consider signing Julio Zuleta, a 6-foot-6, 240-pound right-handed hitting first baseman who has spent the past 31/2 seasons playing in Japan. Zueleta, 31, has batted over .300 with six career homers off right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka, according to his agent, Mike Nicotera. He also has batted over .300 against lefty Kei Igawa, and his hits include the longest home run ever hit at Hanshin Stadium. The Red Sox are negotiating with Matsuzaka, the Yankees with Igawa.

Hilarious. Go Julio!
