It's probably too much trouble, but an "+1" upvote (and maybe downvote?) counter option on posts would be fun. Kind of like RealGM. But I have no idea if something like that is easy to put in or requires a whole new software outlay.

Upvote, yes

Downvote would be a terrible idea on this particular forum

Yeah, I just threw that in there because it would be hilarious to see for a few posters. But probably bad for the board.

In addition to being plain fun, I think it would clear up some clutter to. IE: a funny gif is posted and you get like 5 straight "hahaha's" quoting the post. Upvotes would be easier.

Exactly, plus the same with downvotes; instead of a string of posts constantly complaining about someone they'd just be tagged into oblivion with downvotes. Just ensure that it could at least be seen by the staff who is doing the voting.

I know there's other board software you can buy like Xenforo that has "like" systems, but I don't know if PHPBB has anything like that. And I imagine that migrating to new software would be a pain in the ass.

The problem is that people will still reply to them even if its downvoted and everyone will see the quoted replies. Same issue with ignoring someone now.

Nah; it's much easier to just hit dislike. People want to voice their displeasure somehow, so this gives them an outlet instead of the stupid foe feature.

if i could just click a button saying a post is stupid rather than typing a response, i'd definitely do that

It's more likely that people will down vote AND snark about it

Yup. So many posts suck and their suckiness should be noted, but an actual response just isn't worth it.

and then the people with the most awful posts should get shamed with something under their names

Derwood is just going to assume somebody registered new user names to downvote him.

Instead of quoting this, I would have given it an up vote.

I probably would have, too

Here's the list of available extensions. I'm open to adding it if you can find one.

I may have found one...

Time to test it out.

btw - if you pass your cursor over the top of the number next to the heart, it shows who "loved" the post.

There's an extension that builds on this one to show the "Post of the Day", "Post of the Week", etc. But that one doesn't quite look ready for prime time yet.

FYI you also get notifications for each like that says who liked it.

Is there anyway to change the heart to something Cubs related?

There would be if I dug into the code, I'm sure. But that would make updating it harder and it may not work with the extensions coming out that build upon it if I muck with it the wrong way.

what's the difference between the red heart and the white heart?

The red heart in the body of the post says that you have not yet liked that post, but still have the option to do so.

The white heart in the body of the post says that you have liked that post, but can click it again to "unlike" it

The red heart by your username shows how many posts you have liked

The white heart by your username shows how many of your posts others have liked.
