These are great ideas you have and I am glad that stupid job stuff isn't in your way, besides who needs to feed a family?

lol - there's still a job, just not one that will wear me down like the last one.

Hey Tim, which Blog are you utilizing? I couldn't tell if it was something like b2evolution or what.

Also, Have you thought about containing the NSBB site in a CMS like Joomla or Drupal?

I'm more familiar with Joomla, but there are add-ons like community builder that help keep everyone accounted for (same login for everything etc) and bridges for phpbb (though I do prefer SMF a little). Just a thought!

Yeah, I've looked into Joomla, in particular, lately. It is very tempting, but I'd have to think how to integrate some of the future ideas I have for the site. Many of the things I want to add are more custom web applications than simple content, so I'd probably have to expand my programmings skillset to ramp up on how to coordinate that with Joomla.

Understandable. I am the webmaster for a small college and I am still working on the complete conversion from static html pages over to Joomla. Some of the extra programming stuff though would work right in (just make sure you're calling the user info from the database which is pretty easy).

For certain pages on the site, I'm already utilizing the phpbb user tables and validation routines. Frankly, I'm ready to walk away from phpbb if the very, very, very long awaited version 3 doesn't scale up to my needs and provide search with less stress on my server.

show's how far behind I am... I remember the long awaited release of version 2.0.

Have you messed around with SMF at all? They have conversions from phpbb available... but I'd assume it'd be messy with a database the size of this one.

http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?converters

That looks like nice board software at first glance. I'll have to investigate a bit more closely if I decide not to go to phpbb3. I'm also considering going the commercial route and investing in some software considering this is by far the most-used part of the website.

I'm also considering a change to a .net framework for the website instead of php/mysql. My day job is at a company that develops on that platform so I have to learn it anyway, I received a copy of the enterprise edition of MS Studio and I have an incredible resource I could use to help me with development if I moved that that platform. However, I'm worried about compatability with firefox for the dynamic elements I want to incorporate as well just being a fan of the open source community as a general rule.

Switching to .net might cause a lot of problems early on, but if you are going to be working with it in "real life" it might be nice.

There is an ASP forum called "Snitz" (http://forum.snitz.com/ ) which is kinda like phpbb.

You'd probably have to make sure your blog software was compatible with asp/.net programming if you want to use one "users" table, though I haven't done much research on the cross-compatibility of .net(i'm asuming mssql) and mysql.

Now that I'm rambling, its possible to run phpbb/smf and snitz and most blog software on mssql servers, so if you do go that route, you could use the same table.

[/end babble]

Tim, is there any way you could change the markers next to each post to let users know if they've posted in that thread or not? Alot of times I forget which threads I post in and it would help tremendously.

Go to the "view your posts" in the right upper corner. Or don't you like it up there and would rather have it on the threads?

On the cubs.com thread there's a marker (I believe an exclamation point, but it's been so long since I've posted there that I'm not sure) next to any thread that you've posted in.

I've always wanted it on the actual posts

Other than the link in this thread, is there any other way to access the blogs? Will the eventually be seen on the front page or should we start a thread about our blog when we write one?

I've found it from the front page-click on articles, and blogs is listed as an option under that.

Oh ok. I looked on the front page, but I didn't notice a link.
