From the article:

Speculation had centered on the possibility that Speier would return to the Cubs, just as pitching coach Larry Rothschild survived the purge of manager Dusty Baker's staff. But sources confirmed on Tuesday that Speier will not return.

Is that really a promotion? Personally I think I'd rather manage a AAA team than be the 3rd base coach of a major league team.

But once you've done the minor league manager thing, the next step is getting major league coaching experience. Teams seem to like both in their candidates. There's not much use in staying as a manager at AAA once you've done it.

Plus, it's worth it for the travel/hotel situation alone.

And it might pay better.

I think it is a major promotion. I used to work in Minor League Baseball, and the whole intent of anyone on the baseball side--players, coaching staff, trainers--is to get to the big leagues. Plus, a lot of third base coaches are given consideration for Major League managing jobs.

it is if you want to manage in the big leauges some day. unless he has major leauge experience as a player, i dont think many teams if any would give him a shot with only minor leauge experience. even gullien who played in the majors had to coach a few years with the marlins before he made the leap to manager. same thing with girardi.

interesting...

I'd think he'd be a good 1st base coach and liason to Lou on the young players in the system. Isn't third base coach more important and Quade doesn't have much MLB experience right? I didn't hear Von Josua's name as a possible hitting coach either...any news?

murph on the score seems to think that ryno will be the next 1b coach for the cubs. not a bad idea imo since he wants to get back into the game. he can certainly help guys like theriot & ep.

That's a good place to start for him.

i think so too. there's not to much damage he can do at 1b (unlike 3b or hitting coach). i'm glad he wants to get back in baseball. between ryno & trammell, the cubs would have a wealth of knowledge for their middle infielders to draw on.

Yeah...it would probably a good place for someone like Grace to start out too.

Already this sounds questionable.

However, given that the 1B coach job seems to entail timing the pitcher's move to first and smacking guys on the butt when they make it to first base, it wouldn't be the worst of ideas.

Don't forget...Murph was the one that reported that MacPhail would be gone about a month or two before it happened.

The Mississippi Leg Hound sends the runner home and he scores!!!!

All that's left is the hitting and 1st base coaches, correct? So far I'm pretty happy with the staff Lou has assembled.

It makes my ridiculous dream of having ARod at SS and Soriano at 2nd even more awesome. If only, if only...

Ryne Sandberg coaching Eric Patterson into becoming a perennial all-star would perhaps be the greatest thing I've ever experienced as a sports fan.

Ryan being part of the Cubs team in any way while the Cubs won the world series. Now THAT, would be the greatest thing.
