According to Bruce Levine of ESPN Radio AM 1000 (heard this morning at 7:20 AM CDT), the Cubs have targeted Julio Lugo as a potential free agent signing (along with Alfonso Soriano).

He didn't specify what position Lugo would play if signed.

I assume 2B if Izturis is here, or SS if Izturis is dealt. Piniella must have liked him when he had him in Tampa Bay.

He's a cheap imitation of Rafael Furcal. I wouldn't mind having him on the roster at all. Of course, I view Izturis as a utility player, so just about anyone who can provide better offensive production and would be a replacement for Izturis in the starting line up will get a thumbs up from me. And that includes Theriot.

That would be a solid pick up.

I'd be fine with a Lugo signing, but I'm a little scared of him. He's gotten much better the last two years, but really struggled when he came over to the National League. If Izturis was traded and Lugo played short, I would be fine with him-at second, I'd rather look at some other options first.

I'd love to see the Cubs sign Lugo and Soriano. Lugo could bat leadoff and then Soriano second. This way we don't totally waste Soriano's potential to be an RBI machine leading off. Lugo, Soriano, DLee, Ramirez, Murton, Jones, Barret, Pie/Theriot (depends were Soriano plays) is a veyr good lineup.

Lugo for short, Soriano for center, Theriot for second.

Theriot

Lugo

Lee

Ramirez

Soriano

Jones

Barrett

Murton

or some variation. Um, yeah, that should work out ok. Sign a starter quality backup outfielder (Lofton) to hedge your bet on Theriot (if he tanks, you move Soriano back to second, and put Lofton in center). Then spend everything else on pitching. :D

Lugo, however, is not writing a "hypothetical" book about how he did it...

hmm..potential business prospect?

I'll take all the book publishers in the first half of the alphabet, you take all the ones in the second half.

Hopefully Lugo goes along with this once we get a deal in place...

Lugo was acquitted because his wife recanted during the trial. She said she stumbled as she was pulling away from him and slammed her own head into the car and that the incident was her fault for provoking him. She also said that although they had filed for divorce, they were going to reconcile.

Apparently reconciliation didn't work out, since he's now divorced.

During the trial, defense attornies claimed that Lugo was acting in self-defense and was trying to block her blows when she received a lump on her forehead and a swollen lip. After the verdict, Lugo signed autographs for the jury and offered to send them baseballs.

So sure, he was acquitted, but I have my doubts as to whether the acquittal means he didn't assault her.

Does it matter? I haven't heard that he's caused any problems other than this off-the-field matter, so I wouldn't rule him out. I also wouldn't run out and buy a Lugo jersey if he were signed.

I'd love to see Lugo at 2B next season. A MIF of Lugo/Izturis would be ridiculous.

Say what you want about Izturis's bat, dude is awesome in the field.

DLee has very good range at 1B. Lugo at 2B would have great range. Izturis has outstanding range. Ramirez is average range-wise.

That's a lot of balls that don't make it through the IF and really helps your pitchers out.

Finally, something I agree about. :D :D

if the cubs had a staff of brandon webbs we could survive with a glove man at short. the problem is most of our staff is a strike out staff and our top two pitchers are league average GB guys. Zambrano isnt a GB specialist anymore. Izturis wouldnt be the worst start if Sean Marshall is on the mound but if we sign Schmidt or Zito we're looking at two more flyball pitchers. It's going to minimize the SS's impact.

I'd switch Murton and Theriot or bump Lugo to leadoff and Murton to #2.

Is anyone worried about Lugos drop-off upon going to the Dodgers? Small sample (49 games, 146 at bats) but the line was .219/.278/.267. Of course, maybe he lowered his price by doing that.

Just wonder which Lugo we get, the one from Tampa who put up OBPs over .360 the last few years, or the one from LA and Houston who put up pretty atrocious numbers.

It's the Cubs, need you ask? Of course we'd get the LA version.

See, that's why I love you guys. Nobody else gets the joke when I lament hating to watch the Colts or The Bears, because I've "got curse all over me".

Wasn't it under Piniella that Lugo's offense started to turn-around?
