It's obviously that time of season when teams are simply trying to get by anyway they can. With Sean Casey tearing a calf muscle in Game 1 and probably gone for the rest of the ALCS, shortstop Carlos Guillen has slid over to first and – gulp – Neifi Perez has taken over at short. Replacing your number three hitter with a guy who hit .200 in 21 games with Detroit?

While it's one thing to include Perez in the lineup, why does manager Jim Leyland have him batting second? Perez took an 0-for-4 with a strikeout Wednesday night in Game 2, about par for the course for him.

Michael Rosenberg, in his column for the Detroit Free Press, may have put it best when he wrote: "Leyland has an odd affection for Perez. He says Perez has a lot of energy. So does Regis Philbin, and I wouldn't let him bat second, either."

It's something that has puzzled me for some time as well, and continually makes me wonder what kind of incriminating photos of Leyland Perez has in his safety deposit box.

I know Neifi is long gone, but it is still funny to see how he is talked about in the media. This gets me thinking that maybe it wasn't just Dusty. Maybe there's something about him that makes mangaers love him  .

He's comfort food for lazy baseball minds. He "does the little things", is "gold glove caliber", knows how to bunt, makes lots of contact and runs at a reasonable rate of speed. It wasn't until very recently that people started criticizing managers for using a guy like Neifi, let alone hitting him 2nd. Neifi is the type of player old-school types believe a middle infielder is supposed to be. He could go 0-20, but if he lays down a sac bunt he'll keep his job.

Memo to Jim Hendry:

Jim, I believe Regis Philbin is availible to play 2nd base, he is exactly the type of player you love, scrappy and full of energy. Lou should also love him since he's older than Muthusela.

That's not true. Methusela was actually a senior during Lou's freshman year so Methusela is probably 3 years older.

If only Harry was still around to try to say Muthusela... :D

I just had another Matt Foley flashback, goony  I agree - for lazy baseball minds (I like that turn of phrase) his utter lack of plate discipline and OBP doesn't detract at all from the aesthetics of laying down a pretty bunt, or starting a 6-4-3 dp.

I gues Neifi has bad pictures of Leyland too. Man how does this guy keep playing? He must laugh himself to sleep every night. My prediction: the Tigers will not win the ALCS if Neifi starts every game from here on out.

My Prediction: Neifi will pull a 2003 Lenny Harris.
