On September 27, Michael Silverman / The Boston Herald[/url]"]Matt Clement’s Red Sox career in all likelihood ended on the operating table yesterday in Birmingham, Ala., after Dr. James Andrews discovered significant damage in the 32-year-old’s right throwing shoulder.

There were strong indications that the unexpected damage would keep Clement out all of next season, the final year of the three-year, $25.5 million deal he inked as a free agent before the 2005 season. The Red Sox were expected to make a strong push to trade Clement this offseason but yesterday’s surgery eliminates that and means the Sox are responsible for the $9.5 million remaining on the contract.

According to sources, Andrews discovered tears in both the labrum and rotator cuff in Clement’s shoulder, and three separate procedures had to be performed in what began as a relatively simple exploratory arthroscopic procedure.

Extended rehabs, sometimes longer than 12 months, are not uncommon for labrum or rotator cuff tears, though Clement’s injuries are not considered career-threatening.

There was some discussion of Clement in Transactions, but I couldn't find the thread.

He's done.

Good move not resigning him Jim.

Frame that quote, you might not see it for a long time.

About the only one that I can think of in a very long time. Clements nonsigning also had to do with the Cubune being cost conscious more than anything. Now about not signing Carlos Beltran a couple of years ago when the opportunity presented itself? Or Vlad or Tejada, or ........(fill in blank). While he might have guessed right on that nonsigning, Jimbo has shown he is pretty much clueless on putting together a winning team. This train wreck we watched this year, only proves this.

What about next week? ;)

The theme of next week will be

"something that should have been done along time ago"

this now officially puts him on the radar for a signing by the Cubs at a low figure, then rehab him and trade him.

It was only a matter of time before this happened. Good luck with your operation Matty.

Yeah, I actually thought he'd have to have surgery a few years ago. Rarely do you find guys who rely on sliders lasting this long without major surgery.

I almost feel sorry for the team that gets Zambrano, the FA.

His surgery comes after Hendry signs him to the longest most expensive contract given out by the Cubs ever.

The day after.
