“That would be great,” Baker said. “I’m pulling for him every day to get hits. Three hundred is a magic number, and I’d like to see him hit 15 (home runs), too.

“He’s got a chance to do all of those and drive in some more runs. That’s a building block for next year. He’s still learning. Like I said earlier when they asked me did I think he can hit the ball out of the ballpark, I said eventually.

“Everybody’s talking about, ‘Go get an outfielder with power. No. 1, they’re not that (easy) to find. No. 2, you might have one under your nose, if you’re willing to wait on him.

I like the bolded part. We waited how long on CPat? Murton is the real deal. He isn't going to tank on you. Dude can hit for average and get on base. He'll zone the plate better with experience and the power will come (if his second half is indicative of the future).

Oh my God, Dusty sort of stood up for both Murton and Cedeno (to a lesser extent).

He can be pretty supportive especially when he knows he's not going to be their manager much longer.

There's nothing 'sort of' about it. He came right out and said Murton should be the guy next year.

And yet he won't start him everyday right now.

I'm not backing Dusty, I'm just taking his quote in context. He did specifically state 'next year' as the point of reference for the comment.

I don't have the first clue as to why Murton is not everyday right now. Maybe Dusty is just trying to give everyone playing time, since the time really doesn't matter. He probably wants to leave with no enemies.

Little known fact... Murton has put up better numbers than Carlos Lee in the 2nd half.

Really!?!?

Stats anyone? If so, then I say lets definitely forget about Lee and grab ourselves a heaping hot plate of pitching...

Oh wow, I knew he has been real good but I didn't realize he has the 8th best OPS post-ASB. I've been saying that Murton should be our left fielder next year for quite some time now. This just reaffirms that.

BIG MURT FOR LF in '07!!

Then they will need to replace both CF and RF. Doesn't matter, either way they needed to replace 2 guys out there, IMO.

I always come back to my idea of platooning Murton with Jacque with the idea he'd hopefully be able to take over RF after a year or two. Get big bopper for LF a la Dunn, C-Lee, etc. and haul up Pie.

That, or Jacque in CF.

What about getting Matthews Jr for CF and Durham for 2B?

that leaves quite a bit of money available for 2 pitchers, that I think are more needed.

Mathews may be no better than Pierre, but if he's cheap he's also somebody you could replace with Pie pretty easily.

I believe he's been playing Murton more than Jones the last few weeks-3-4 weeks maybe?

Murton 23 starts in LF

Jones 26 starts in RF

keep in mind, folks, that stat is out of LF, not overall players. Still impressive. He's 42nd overall.

I think you mean Pagan, not Jones.

I think many people would argue that Dusty could play Pagan in CF if he really feels the need to see him play.

Thanks Fred for the stat-I knew it was going to be pretty close either way.
