It's extremely windy in Boise and alternating between heavy rain drops and light sprinkles.

Interesting. At least the rain might help with the fires?

Had this email from a friend in Boise earlier today:

We have had several bad fire seasons since we moved here, but this year is particularly bad. They have cancelled all athletic events for school age kids (no recess even!) and it is "Red Flag Warning" here (no mowing, trimming, blowing, etc), and of course, a burn ban is in effect. You can't even see the foothills!

One of the drawbacks of our lovely little valley! Even the wind doesn't help, it only blows in fresh smoke, no matter which direction it comes from!

Choke gag, signing off......

There wasn't much in the way of precip - it was mostly in the 2nd inning. Looking at the radar at the time, it was mostly light and widely scattered around southern Idaho. And it was awfully windy - gusts to 30 mph.

We've been very lucky with only a couple major wildfires so far this summer in Southern California.

The Boise Hawks defeated the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, 5-1 Thursday night in the first game of the Northwest League Championship Series. Mark Pawelek, the Chicago Cubs first round draft pick in 2005, pitched like a #1starter as he shutout the Volcanoes on three hits, just one of which left the infield. Pawelek no-hit the Volcanoes for four and two-thirds innings and left with two runners on and two outs in the seventh. Jeremy Papelbon took it from there and picked up the save. The left-hander from Jacksonville, FL did not allow a hit the rest of the way. The Volcanoes scored an unearned run in the eighth inning for their only tally.

Pawelek gave up a walk to open the fourth inning to Chris Todd. With two outs, Bobby Felmy, who hit .400 against the Hawks in the regular season, hit a ground ball down the third base line. Josh Lansford made a great diving stop, and then scrambled to his feet to throw out Felmy at first and save a run. Pawelek walked three on the night, hit a batter and struck out three. He turned the game over to Papelbon who got Mike McBryde to pop up to end the inning. The Volcanoes loaded the bases in the eighth inning on a strike out/wild pitch, an error and a walk. Papelbon got Matt Weston to ground into a double play as the run scored. He then got Matt Rohlinger to fly out and leave a runner stranded on third.

The Hawk’s offense went as if it were scripted. Matt Matulia doubled for the first Hawks hit in the first inning. He moved to third on the first of three Tyler Colvin base hits, and then stole home on the back end of a double steal when Colvin was thrown out at second. The Hawks got their second run when Russ Canzler, sporting his playoff mustache, hit his 17th home run of the season to left field. Canzler would add two more hits on the night, including an RBI double in the sixth inning.

Steve Clevenger drove in runs in the fourth and eighth innings with a single and a double, both coming with two outs. The Hawks finished with ten hits on the night.

September 7, 2006 - Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs extended their season for at least another day as they defeated the Beloit Snappers in game two of this best of three series 6-1 Thursday night at O'Brien Field. With the win, the Chiefs forced a game three which will be held in Peoria tomorrow night at 6:30.

With the scored tied 1-1 in the fourth, the Chiefs took their first lead of the series. With one away, Ryan Norwood singled and stole second. After a Kyle Reynolds walk, Yusuf Carter ripped a single up the middle to score Norwood and give the Chiefs a 2-1 edge.

Peoria added to their lead in inning number six. With runners on second and third and nobody out, Kyle Reynolds pulled a liner to right to plate Norwood. With Carter at the plate, reliever Danny Vais delivered a wild pitch to bring home Alberto Garcia and make it a 4-1 ball game.

The Chiefs broke it open in the seventh. Norwood hit a one-hop smash up the middle to bring home Robinson Chirinos. Jesus Valdez scored one batter later on a passed ball to make it a 6-1 score.

Beloit got things started in the first. Tarrance Patterson walked and stole second. William Luque laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Patterson came around to score all the way from second after a fielding error by Valerio Heredia.

The Chiefs got that run right back in their half of the first. Heredia singled to lead off the frame. He stole second and moved up to third on the throwing error by Jose Leger. Robinson Chirinos delivered a sacrifice fly to score Heredia and knot the score at one apiece.

Starter Scott Taylor picked up the win. He allowed no earned runs over seven innings of work. The righty walked two and struck out four. Scott Koerber came on in relief and fired a scoreless eighth, and Matt Avery worked a scoreless ninth on his 23rd birthday. Beloit starter Eddie Morlan allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits over five innings of work.

Pepsi Player of the Game

Scott Taylor (RHP) & Ryan Norwood (1b) - Taylor gave up just the one unearned run in the first in picking up victory number nine in total on the season. Norwood was 3-4 on the night with two runs scored and a run driven-in.

Bobby Dickerson, Oneri Fleita, Lester Strode and Donnie Veal are all present at the Chiefs game.

Yep, the gang was definitely all there last night. Donnie was in town to pick up his car...the call-up was quick enough that his car had just been sitting at his old apartment complex for the last 2 months. He was shocked that it was as it was when he left. :)
