MiLB.com's MWL Playoff Preview[/url]"]Peoria Chiefs vs. Beloit Snappers

(Best-of-3)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES

The two teams split the season series, winning eight games apiece. Peoria and Beloit ended the regular season by splitting a four-game series, so they'll be more than ready to face one another again this week. The Chiefs swept a four-game series in May, but the Snappers took three out of four in both April and July.

HEAD-TO-HEAD STATS

Peoria

The Chiefs hit.242 and slugged .336 as a team against the Snappers. Alberto Garcia hit .367, with five doubles and seven RBIs. Jesus Valdez collected 15 hits in 46 at-bats, while Robinson Chirinos hit .311 with five doubles and five RBIs ... Peoria's pitching staff posted a 3.23 ERA against Beloit. Mitch Atkins tossed 7 2/3 scoreless innings against the Snappers on Sept. 1. Jesus Yepez did not factor into a decision despite tossing 18 2/3 innings over four appearances and compiling a 2.41 ERA.

Beloit

The Snappers hit .243 and slugged .344 against the Chiefs. Dwayne White hit .297 over 37 at-bats. Eli Tintor hit .308 and scored a team-high 12 runs. Erik Lis and Paul Kelly, the team's two leading run producers vs. Peoria, are no longer with the club ... Beloit's pitching staff posted a 2.92 overall ERA against Peoria. Adam Hawes went 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA over three appearances. Alexander Smit went 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA and struck out 20 batters over 17 innings.

ON THE MOUND

Peoria

Mitch Atkins: The dominating staff ace led the team in wins (13), ERA (2.41), and strikeouts (127).

Scott Taylor: The 19-year-old went just 8-8 over 22 starts, but compiled a respectable 3.39 ERA and walked just 28 batters over 140 2/3 innings.

Matt Avery: The fireballing closer struck out 76 batters over just 67 innings.

Beloit

Yohan Pino: Pino is tied for the league lead in wins (14), despite making seven starts against 35 relief appearances. The red-hot right-hander posted a 2.70 ERA in August, his highest of the season.

Ryan Mullins: Poor run support led to a disappointing 5-8 record, but the Nashville native compiled a respectable 3.86 ERA and struck out 139 over a team-high 156 1/3 innings pitched.

Alexander Smit: Smit is 5-1 since joining the starting rotation, 7-2 overall. Smit, who was born in Norway, struck out an amazing 141 batters over 108 1/3 innings.

AT THE PLATE

Peoria

Ryan Norwood, 1B: The 23-year-old first baseman has been the Chiefs' most consistent offensive performer. Norwood hit .307 with 15 homers and 69 RBIs.

Jesus Valdez, OF: The Venezuelan left fielder batted .302 with 25 doubles and 61 RBIs. He also hit .321 in the month of August.

Robinson Chirinos, 2B/SS: Chirinos hit just .242, but this scrappy infielder draws plenty of walks (69) and excites on the basepaths (19 stolen bases).

Beloit

Edward Ovalle, OF: Consistent but unspectacular, the 21-year-old Dominican was among the Snappers' leaders in hits (123) and RBIs (55).

Eli Tintor, OF: After a slow start, Tintor hit .333 in July and .294 in August. The 21-year-old native of Minnesota slugged 12 homers and drove in 54 runs.

Matthew Betsill, 1B: A late addition to the Snappers' lineup, the 22-year-old Georgian provided a spark by hitting .280 over 100 at-bats.

HISTORY LESSONS

The Chiefs won it all in 2002, but since then have appeared in the playoffs just once (a first-round loss to Kane County in 2004). Since the team's inception in 1983, Peoria has won the Division Championship just two times ... The Snappers have won only one MWL Championship in their 24-year history, but the club captured the Division crown in 2001 and 2003.

SERIES COULD TURN ON...

Beloit's continued ability to play well under adversity. Despite losing many of their best players to injuries and callups (including slugger Erik Lis and starter Oswaldo Perez), the Snappers actually played better in the second half than they did in the first. Peoria, meanwhile, has played under .500 in the second-half after winning the Division in the first.

PREDICTION

The Snappers haven't had a losing month since May, and there is no reason to believe September will be any different. Beloit in two.

Boo on the prediction!

Is there anything more meaningless to the prediction of the outcome of the series than the respective playoff history of two minor league franchises?

I think my husband and I have given in and are going to make the round-trip to Beloit and back today. After seeing the games Fri-Sun, I think the Chiefs have a good chance of winning this in 2 - we should have won Saturday, and looked convincing on Friday and Sunday. The Monday win for Beloit I don't count for anything, as we should have never played the game in the first place...and the run they got to "win" was just a fluke brought on by the sloppy conditions.

Go Chiefs!

Jake Fox in BA's Hot Sheet:

Jake Fox, c, Cubs (Double-A West Tenn): A third-round pick out of Michigan in 2003, Fox made it to Double-A this season after spending all of last year--and half of this season--at high Class A Daytona. This has been a breakout year for Fox, who never hit higher than .287 in a season (low Class A Lansing, 2004). In 442 at-bats, Fox hit .294/.350/.514--with probably his most impressive stat being the 16 home runs he put up in the FSL.
