Mark Pawelek (game 1 starter) and C Matt Canepa, amongst others, are already in Boise, resting and getting ready for the NWL finals. Jose Ceda did not get hurt last time when he went 2 innings. Brian and splendid splinter were right, Ceda was just switching with Muldowney for the rotation.

Apparently it's smoky and not air quality-wise nice in Boise due to some wildfires in the area - conditions should be the same for game 1 tomorrow.

Nah, they start tomorrow in Boise. Looks like bad weather will plague them during the whole playoff series: it should be smoky in Boise with the wildfires around and then there's a chance for rain in Keizer for each of the last 3 games.

Boise jumps ahead in the top of the 2nd on a Josh Lansford solo HR.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Shutout in Game 1; Face Must Win at Home Thursday

September 6, 2006 - Beloit, WI - The Peoria Chiefs got a solid outing from ace Mitch Atkins Wednesday night but he was outdone by Snappers starter Yohan Pino who tossed a 2-0 shutout as Beloit took game one of the Best-of-3 first round series.

Peoria’s Mitch Atkins and Beloit’s Yohan Pino battled scoreless into the bottom of the sixth inning surrendering just a combined six hits. Beloit started the sixth with a leadoff single from William Luque. Atkins then got Matt Betsill and Dwayne White to pop up to shortstop for two quick outs. With a 3-1 count, Eli Tintor crushed a two-run homer of the left field wall for a 2-0 Beloit lead.

Peoria’s first chance came in the fifth inning against Pino. Ryan Norwood led off with a single to left-center and with one out Kyle Reynolds dropped a single into center. But Pino rallied to strike out Yusuf Carter swinging and Mark Reed looking to end the rally.

Atkins (0-1) lasted six innings allowing just two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out three. The only Beloit runs against Atkins came on the two-run homer off the bat of Tintor. Justin Rayborn tossed two shutout innings allowing one walk with one strikeout out of the Chiefs bullpen.

Pino (1-0) shut the Chiefs out through nine innings allowing just four hits while striking out six. The right-hander who was 14-2 in the regular season threw 99 pitches for his first career complete game.

Pepsi Player of the Game

Mitch Atkins (SP) - Atkins blanked Beloit through five and made just one mistake in the game. The ace matched Pino early and finished with three strikeouts and no run support.

It was good to see Oneri there. It was the best I've seen Atkins the few times I've caught him, especially his curve.

I don't think Peoria had a runner past 3rd, when they did get runners on, they hit into DPs.

Pino didn't overpower anyone, but he pitches backwards and locates as well as anyone in the MWL w/good movement.

Terry Ryan was also there from the Twins.

With no outs in the bottom of the 9th inning, Tri-City wins it on a bases-loaded bloop single. The final is 4-3. I'll post the boxes in a few minutes.

Yap yap yap. :P

Sorry, was distracted by the TV.

You could have posted the boxes, you know. I'm impressed you were up so late.

Unfortunately, Crim Law and Contracts took precedent over any plans I had last night. :(

PJ Star"]BELOIT, Wis. - Unfortunately for the Chiefs, it was Beloit Snappers starter Yohan Pino who continued to look more at home than anyone at Pohlman Field. Pino won a duel of right-handed aces, beating Peoria's Mitch Atkins 2-0 in the opener of a best-of-3 series.

"He was throwing a fastball, curveball, slider and changeup, and the thing was he was throwing them all for strikes," Chiefs cleanup hitter Ryan Norwood said. "Sometimes you face these guys who have devastating breaking balls, but they can't throw them for strikes. He threw every one of his pitches for strikes and he varied his speeds as well. He can run it up there at 91, but he might throw you a fastball at 85. That keeps you off-balance."

...

"I was locating my pitches better than ever," Pino said through a translator.

Atkins made just one significant mistake in six strong innings, but it was a costly one to Beloit slugger Eli Tintor.

Tintor drove a fastball up in the zone for a two-out, two-run home run off the scoreboard beyond the wall in left-center field to give the Snappers a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

"I pretty much knew it was going to be a pitchers' duel, the way he's thrown all year," Atkins said of Pino. "It ended up being like that. I threw the ball well, but I made the one mistake."

The homer came four days after Tintor hit a game-ending homer against the Chiefs during the teams' final regular-season series.

"He threw it right down the middle and I took advantage of it," Tintor said. "The rest is history.

Atkins, 13-4 in the regular season, allowed four hits and two runs in six innings.

"One 3-1 pitch, and the guy didn't miss it," Chiefs manager Jody Davis said. "I didn't feel like we lost it - they won it. They made those pitches, and you don't win many with zero."

Pino also threw a good cutter as well.

What's he still doing spending a full season at low-A at age 22 with 5 viable pitches, given the success he's had this season?

Ft. Myers is loaded w/them as well.

Good point. That system is loaded.
