Greg Maddux was quoted as saying, "I've seen more plays here in a month than I've seen in the last three months. They cover a lot of ground."

"He's saying what he thought was true," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "Greg's not going to say anything he doesn't think is true. Who knows? He has pretty good eye for things, and Greg's at the point where he needs defense."

Good one. Wish someone woulda pushed him to elaborate on that. Hope Jim hears it too.

Dusty apparently couldn't stand Maddux basically saying he's seeing better defense behind him now than he has in the last three months? I guess it could be seen as a dig by Maddux...I'd wish Dusty could be as clever when he's managing his own damn team.

Looks like a dig at Hendry. Hendry focused on speed and defense and Mad Dog says the Dodgers' defenders are far superior to the Cubs' and they have more range.

im slightly lost on the significance of the quote.

Maddux used to be so dominant that he could beat other teams by himself and didn't need a solid defense to win games, only a competent one. Now he needs a very good defense because he can't manipulate batters into hitting little ground balls anymore.

Let me ask you everybody here....is Maddux lying with his statement?'

It should be a slap at Hendry for the fact that he preached "guys who can catch the ball", and yet Hendry still went after Pierre and Jones, who are both considered at least average---atbest---defensive OFers.

And while, Dusty gave Maddux a throwback barb, the fact is...pitchers in general need good defense to be successful, not just Maddux.

So people are giving Baker WAYYYYYY too much credit for his quote.

It is not often that we can give Dusty positive credit for a quote at all.

Maddux gave up a 23% LD% this year as a Cub, with an opposing BABIP of .306. So either Maddux was really really lucky or his defense was doing a lot more helping than he thought(the obvious answer is both had a role).

Shouldn't you be painting your face for the game right now?

I understand what you're saying but I think if you have faith in your defense you can relax and pitch and not try to be perfect on every pitch.

Gametime is at 6, plenty of time to get into a frenzy before then. :D

I agree, and everything points to Maddux being able to trust his defense this year, which makes his comments odd.
