The Chicago Cubs today activated pitchers Scott Eyre and Sean Marshall from the 15-day disabled list. In addition, Chicago activated Wade Miller from the 60-day disabled list and recalled catcher Geovany Soto from Triple-A Iowa.

Eyre, 34, landed on the disabled list August 16 with a right hamstring strain. The left-handed reliever has posted a 2.60 ERA (15 ER/52.0 IP) in 60 relief appearances for Chicago this season. He has limited opponents to a .249 batting average while recording at least one strikeout in 40 of his 60 games.

Marshall, 24, was placed on the disabled list July 23 with a strained right oblique. The left-handed rookie has made 19 starts for the Cubs, posting a 5-8 record with a 4.98 ERA (57 ER/103.0 IP). Marshall was 0-2 with a 3.32 ERA (8 ER/21.2 IP) in four rehabilitation starts with Triple-A Iowa,

August 12-27, walking 14 and striking out 21.

Miller, 29, began the 2006 season on the disabled list with right shoulder arthroscopy after signing as a minor league free agent in January. The right-hander has gone 2-0 with a 3.60 ERA (14 ER/35.0 IP) in eight rehabilitation starts between Single-A Peoria, Double-A West Tenn and Triple-A Iowa. His last appearance came on August 23 with Iowa when he tossed 5.0 innings and earned the win vs. New Orleans.

Soto, 23, has batted .272 (93-for-342) with 21 doubles, six home runs and 38 RBI in 108 games for Triple-A Iowa this season. He owns a .340 average against left-handed pitching (32-for-94) and has hit .444 (4-for-9) with the bases loaded this season. This will mark Soto’s second stint with Chicago this season, as he was recalled by the Cubs from June 27-29, but did not make an appearance.

No Pie? Restovich?

I think Dusty mentioned something about he wanted to wait till like the 5th for some of these guys since that's when their season ended or something? I seem to remember hearing that.

yeah Iowa still has games to play can't really take 2/3 of the outfield, Soto won't really hut them since Reyes is there.

Iowa is done on the 4th. Will we see Restovich considering he's not on the 40 man?

I bet we will see Restovich up. If we plan to use him beyond this year (which I doubt) he'll be fine on the 40 man, and we will want to use him. If we don't, then he can be released off of the 40 man after the season-he can take Nevin's spot for now, though.

Not just that, but Iowa is still in the playoff hunt (though Nashville's magic number is 1).

Very, very unlikely that we see Restovich.

So Restovich and Fontanent are on the Cubbie poopie list?

Sure seems like it. Good thing too. We don't need any of those players that just get on base and hit good and stuff.

Felix Pie will not be brought up from Triple-A Iowa for several reasons, including service time and Juan Pierre.

If Pie starts the season in Chicago in 2007, he wouldn't be a free agent until 2113 at the earliest. If he played in September, there's a possibility he could be eligible for free agency in 2112. The Cubs also don't want to take away playing time from Pierre as they prepare for negotiations in the next two weeks over a possible three-year deal.

Sure looks like this team has its priorities set!

2113... deal of the century?

3 year deal #-o, nothing more than 1 year please.

I'd rather they call him up now even though there's a risk they'd lose him after 2112. :D

I didn't see this posted yet. Here's what Dusty had to say on Felix:

"That's not on me," Baker said. "That's on our development people and Jim. We do wish he'd done better. He's got a few things to learn, according to our scouts, about playing the game. Everybody's clamoring for him, but it's not up to me."

On the one hand, I'm really not in a rush to get Felix up to Chicago. I'd be content if they let him start 2007 in AAA to work on a few more things. And the service time issue is real, though only really important if you believe you have a future star on your hands.

But the excuse about Pierre being in his way doesn't hold much water with me. If the Cubs are trying to work out an extension with Pierre anyway, Pie will have to learn to play alongside Juan anyway, right? Isn't it Jones and Murton whose playing time would suffer? And the ever-important Angel Pagan?

I'm not in a rush to bring up Felix either, but as usual, the Cubs reasoning for making their decisions is completely contradictory to what a team should be thinking if a championship is the main goal. The player friendly atmosphere has done nothing to attract quality free agents.

Seriously, it's almost bordering on criminal that Restovich and Fontanent can't get a look at the ML level at this point.
