Mulder's velocity was wayyy down in his return. I don't think the risk/reward is any better than just letting a younger guy pitch. No thank you.

Yeah, I haven't been a Mulder fan since his first few seasons in Oakland. He was looking like the best of the Big 3 for a while (Hudson, Zito included), but easily was the one you could predict wouldn't continue his success. The Cubs need real help. No more of this lightning in the bottle crap, unless there is legitimate high reward chances. Mulder if healthy, IMO, is still a low end #3 starter.

I agree that he's a #3, when healthy he's probably a good 3, but on average he's a 3, imo. What's the downside to going after a real big name to be the #2 this year, and a year deal to another stop-gap 3, or penciling in Prior as that 3 with a AAA vet as backup?

2007:

1) Zambrano

2) Schmidt

3) Stop-Gap #3 (Meche type) until/if Mulder returns healthy

4) Marshall/Hill/Guz/etc

5) Prior or Marshall/Hill/Guz/etc

2008:

1) Zambrano

2) Schmidt

3) Mulder

4) Marshall/Hill/Guz

5) Hill/Guz/Marshall/Gallagher/Veal

Hey look, in 2008 there's no Prior on this team. Not gonna count on him, but if we played our cards right, we'd have some nice trading blocks if Mulder actually came back healthy.

Man, the Cardinals were so stupid to go after that reclamation project Chris Carpenter.

I don't see the point? That was the Cardinals. I'm talking about the Cubs.

Show me one Hendry "rehab project" that has panned out.

And please don't bring up Ryan Dempster who was a flash in the pan.

And as I stated I have nothing against a reclamation project as long as there

is a contingency plan.

Since when have the Cubs ever counted on a reclamation project? They didn't count on Wade Miller this year (where they erred again was counting on Wood and Prior, but not Miller). They didn't count on Dempster the year he came back. They didn't count on Fox, who was just a middle reliever. I don't know if Mulder would sign a deal like Miller did (one year, one mil with a club option), but if he would, I can't see why anyone would have a problem with it. That one million isn't going to prevent us from going after any other decent starter on the market.

Man, the Cardinals were so stupid to go after that reclamation project Chris Carpenter.

It's not a very good comparison mainly because Carpenter sat on our roster for a full year without being activated. Mulder is more comprable to 2005 Matt Morris (good scenario) or 2006 Kerry Wood (bad scenario) in that he is going to be coming back the next year after shoulder surgery.

Really though, we just lucked out that Carpenter came back not only healthy, but a far better pitcher than he was before the injury.
