The Phillies are still looking for outfield help and would like to pry Juan Pierre away from the Chicago Cubs. Pierre could step in for Aaron Rowand, who is out for the rest of the regular season after breaking his left ankle.

Pry him away? With what? Hendry will want near ML ready talent in return. Nothing worthwhile is going to pass through waivers.

Why not trade him for propsects, and then re-sign Pierre in the offseason? I'm not a fan of Pierre, and I'd rather he go away altogether, but even if you want to re-sign him, this seems like a reasonable option. Then you can give Pie a tryout with the big club for September.

What are the rules with waivers and PTBNL? Can the PTBNL be a top prospect or is there some rules about being on/off the 40 man?

I can't imagine that a decent prospect will pass through waivers.

Decent prospects don't necessarily have to be on the 40-man roster.

The "trade the guy away and sign him back later" concept just doesn't fly with me. If it ever works out, fine, but teams should not make such a deal with that sort of intention in mind. When you trade a guy you have to be willing to accept that he'll never be back on your team (unless you specifically trade him for a PTBNL and he is the PTBNL).

Of course, not knowing who on the Phillies was already exposed to and cleared waivers, we don't know who all we could get.

How about this, instead of worrying about what we get back, lets saddle Glendon Rusch's contract onto Philly. Pierre and Rusch for "who the hell cares".

I guess that all depends on how badly Jimbo really wants Pierre back. Maybe he's ambivalent about it. Trade him...get something for him before he's a FA. Hasn't Pierre said something about not coming back if Dusty doesn't? Maybe Hendry thinks the chances of re-signing him aren't that great.

In any case, I'm just giving suggestions of what might "pry" Pierre away. I don't think it's as unrealistic as has been suggested.

I am assuming Hendry is going to resign Pierre. But I would love it if he traded him to Philly and then moved on in the CF and leadoff department (hopefully ignoring stereotypical leadoff hitters and concentrating on just productive hitters). I'm guessing he would have to get something of value to make the move though.

You would think that after finding the so-called ideal leadoff hitter, and still having the offense and team go in the crapper, Jim would get clued in to the idea that leadoff hitter wasn't the answer to all our problems. The team sucked when Pierre was god awful, and they've stunk since Juan started to hit. He has shown a willingness to change course in the past (to his credit for adapting or discredit for not sticking to his plan?), so maybe he will go away from the idea of needing a base stealer at leadoff.

I'd rather offer him arbitration with no intent of signing him and get some draft picks. The draft picks are probably worth more than any prospect in this rumored trade.

That's true.

Not necessarily. First, Cubs suck at drafting. Second, there's no telling what the pick will be. If the signing team also signs a higher ranked player, or is a bottom 15 team, the Cubs run the risk of getting nothing special out of the picks.

Third, and most importantly, offering arbitration means the Cubs risk keeping him, and signing him longterm, which would be a disaster.

Yes. Please trade pierre now. I'm sick of watching other teams run on our outfield. We need a center fielder with an arm and an obp and a slg %. Also I don't want hendry to be tempted to blow a bunch of money on him. So if we get something decent, a prospect who already has good numbers, not one of those high cieling low performance guys, I say do it. Save money and throw Pie in center and with improve defense and money to spend on zito or schmidt and we'll be in a much better positon for next year.

Because those are so easy to find.

"Because those are so easy to find"

Mike Cameron, Gary Matthews Jr, a healthy Jim Edmonds all of which are free agents at the end of this season. My original point though was that Pie will fill those voids better than Pierre can especially on slugging% and defense, the obp still leaves something to be desired.

Matthews, Jr - a lifetime .333 OBP / .415 SLG having a fluke career year at age 31?

Edmonds - 37 years old next year, injury risk, SLG has gone from .643-.533-.475 from 2004-06?

Cameron - an above-average CF, but that's about it; what will he cost on the open market?

NO THANKS

The problem is that this Cubs team has deeper problems than finding a CF with good OBP and SLG. I consider that more of a luxury, something that would have pushed the 2004 team over the top, not this team. While different teams have different needs (more power, more defense, etc.), defense is the number one skill of my ideal CF, followed by OBP. SLG is a nice bonus.

In my previous post I said that we need a Cf'er with a good arm obp, slg %. I really don't want any of those guys but I wont complain if we get one and a starting pitcher. Anyways, Kroth 1342 thought it would be hard to find a guy like that and I was simply showing him they are out there to be had and trying to make my previous point in that Pie can fill those voids more than pierre can for alot cheaper than any free agent.

so do you or do you not want to play pie? All I've been saying is play him because has the defense a decent slg % and hopefully will get better in the obp department. Plus he is so cheap it gives us flexibility to go get a zito or schmidt.
