Pierre has had a OBP over .370 the past couple of months. If he didnt have such a terrible start to the year, he would be batting over .300, and would have a OBP near .370.

But he did have those months.

In seven seasons, Pierre has had TWO seasons in which he posted a better than 370 OBP. He's not likely to do that again.

This year his OBP is 330. It was 326 last season. His career OBP is 351. A few hot months does not erase his entire career.

If you want a lead-off hitter with a better than 350 OBP, you shouldn't look to Pierre. He's not likely to best that mark.

There really isnt anybody else out there.

Who would you suggest?

Matt Murton. Bat Giles second if it's that big of a deal.

Bingo. If Giles likes to hit second, then just elevate Murton to leadoff, where his ~.360-.370 OBP with a little pop would play just fine.

Move Jones to CF and view him as a placeholder for Pie. When Pie's ready Jones becomes a part-time player or trade bait.

Get a solid middle-of-the-order hitter for RF (LH, preferrably), and you're set.

Murton

Giles

Lee

Ramirez

Barrett (or )

(or Barrett)

Jones

Izturis

Jones as a CF and 7th place hitter is more than adequate, and 7th would be a fine place to start Pie.

I like Giles but man, that guy is ALWAYS injured.

This is where I am at. Marcus is past his prime. Unless he comes at a seriously reduced price, I would pass.

He'll be 29 next season. I don't see how that is past his prime.

The same way Wood and Prior are? :x

More Giles trade talk.

David O'Brien / Atlanta Journal-Constitution[/url]"] Skeptics said he was too small to be a major leaguer, and he proved them wrong.

They said his defense would never be good enough for the majors, and he proved them wrong.

They said he wasn't a prototypical leadoff hitter, and he ... proved them right.

Marcus Giles' first season as a leadoff hitter for the Braves could be his last — his last season as a leadoff hitter, and his last season with the Braves.

The 28-year-old second baseman could see his salary rise from this year's $3.85 million to more than $5 million in his final year of arbitration, before he's eligible for free agency after the 2007 season.

The salary, along with his marketability and reluctance to embrace the leadoff role, are all factors that put him at the top of the list of Braves most likely to be traded this winter — just ahead of Andruw Jones, who is also eligible for free agency after the 2007 season.

His numbers have dipped to 267/353/395 this year. While that is a weak SLG, he's been dogged by injuries and it would still be an improvement over Cedeno.

His career numbers are still good with 287/364/453. He has a career 817 OPS as a secondbaseman. He'll turn 29 next season and still looks to be a productive player for a couple of years.

He's now at .265/.345/.392. He's hit a lot better at home this season. His ESPN season splits are here.

I'm still in favor of acquiring Giles, but the need to upgrade SLG is paramount as the positions we likely have openings are postions where it is difficult to find a power bat. If we're going with Murton if left, which I support, we'll need SLG from SS, 2b, or CF. Giles doesn't do that.

But if Soriano is off the board, then I'd want Giles or Durham for second.

I still prefer dealing for Jones if we're going to deal with the Braves.

I like the GIles idea, but we still need to add more power somewhere

Get Giles and Andruw Jones.

I like Andruw, but he's another Juan Pierre waiting to happen. He has 1 year left on his contract. It would cost a lot to get him and you risk losing him after just one season. He's going to want his HUGE payday on the next contract he signs.

That's why I like Drew more.

Unless we take on some bad contract for Andruw. Picking up the rest of Hampton's or Hudson's contract would probably lower the price of prospects quite a bit
