Many Cubs fans highy doubted Wood would be healthy for all

of 2006. And were did they get the estimate that Miller would be ready

by May/June? Where they smoking drugs for crying out loud? He just made it back a week ago and his arm is a shell of what it used to be.

So if they would have opened their eyes that wood/miller were complete crap shoots in 06...they might have seen that the rotation would be extremely vunerable. Had they gone out and got a Millwood or Rodgers would this team be still terrible this year? Probably. But I am just using the rotation planning for 2006 as a sample of how incompetent Hendry is.

add in other misfires as so well pointed out in Bruce Mile's artice today...

and it should suprise noone why this organization is in shambles.

So we all agree that Baker is a double-standard buffoon, who shouldn't be "babysitting" a major league team. I say babysitting, because you can't call what he does "managing", cause the only thing he is managing to do, is make himself look like an idiot.

Pierre is thrown out trying to steal third, and he gets a pass because he is a "vet."

Theriot gets thrown out at third, and is call out as being a player from the "College World Series and he should have known."

To me, that sounds like Baker is calling Pierre an idiot, inadvertly.

But hey, Baker will be gone soon enough, and we can laugh at another teams "stupidity" for snatching Baker.

I thought Theriot was caught stealing third with two outs??? If so, it's a completely different situation than JP trying to get to third w/ 1 out. If this is the case, then these are two completely separate situations and should be viewed differently.

I do believe that is the scenario - you never make the 1st or 3rd out at 3rd base. The 2nd out can be lived with, but obviously not great. But you could make the argument that since JP was the tying run with 2nd, 3rd hitters up, he is already in scoring position. The only reason why you do that is to score then on a sacrifice (fly most likely). And I doubt that Theriot is your primary sacrafice fly candidate.

Cub fans were doubting Woods health in March

I posted on another MB in March of 2006 that Wood would have a

season ending injury in June.

Tell me how is that hindsight?

And a lot were not doubting his health in March. With no setbacks in his rehab, he should have been back by May 1 at the latest. Hendry should have had a stronger plan, but there were also no strong indications that we would see the Prior that we saw and Williams would completely lose everything he ever had. Things didn't look anywhere near this bad in March.

Because Hendry had to make his personnel decisions from Oct-Jan

I don't think anything was different regarding Wood in March vs Oct-Jan.

They knew he was a ? to start the season.

Am I not allowed to hold our GM to a higher standard? Yes hindsite is 20/20. And its easy for us as fans to point figures and say what if.

But Hendry is a professional making easily over 6 figures.

So when something goes wrong whether it be the rotation, or not correctly

evualuation a prosect like Rick Nolasco, I will hold them accountable.

Hindsight I would have traded Nolasco for Pierre to this offseason.

But I also don't have in depth access to the minor league system. I'm not talking with coaches, scouts, etc. Obviously Flordia saw something that everyone in the Cubs organization just flat out missed.

You think that Hendry missed the fact that Nolasco had talent?

I think Hendry knew Ricky was going to be a MLB pitcher. I also think he values what Pierre brings to the table very highly and was willing to give up Nolasco to get it.

As for the rest...I understand if you're disgruntled. I expect more from Hendry, too, and would like to see him replaced.

But I don't expect clairvoyancy from him.

No. I think Hendry under-estimated his value though.

If he new that Nolasco was not only big-league ready, but could win

10+ games would he have dealt him for Pierre who only had 1 year left on his contract and would command an extremely over-valued new deal?

I certainly hope not.

I don't expect clairvoyancy. But with 95 milliion in ammo I expect

a team that is better than 27 games below .500.

I expect more out of our GM, also. But I think there's enough to pick on with Hendry that we don't need to exaggerate any of his faults or mistakes.

Will do. I'll hold off till I can comment on the the mistakes

he will make this offseason.

Agreed that Theriot is not your primary fly ball candidate-they may have tried a squeeze there though. Also, the number 3 hitter was going to be a little worse than usual-remember that Ramirez had been thrown out of the game (the pinch hitter the next inning in the 3 slot was Soto to give you an estimate of the caliber of hitter we had left). So it was a good chance that it was Theriot or nothing, and giving him a chance with the infield in might have been worth the risk-it's a tough call.

Tell me how is that hindsight?

Wood was always a big doubt, but Prior really wasn't over the off season short of maybe missing a start or two at the beginning. Again, Jerome really seemed to have turned a corner. Plus the Cubs had the funky schedule at the beginning that allowed to basically go with just 4 starters. It was thought Rusch could at least not totally crap the bed until Prior showed back up, then you'd have Prior/Z/Maddux/Williams/Rusch or Marshall until, in theory, Wood and/or Miller made it back or Hill and Guzman showed they could come up. At the time, that wasn't the best or worst of plans. I was far more concerned about the offense than I was the pitching. The biggest x-factor is Prior...despite what anyone would claim, him developing this mysterious season-ending condition/injur(ies)y came out of nowhere. Despite his past, you subtract those two fluke injuries, anything else he had didn't sidetrack him too much and at the most he missed, what, a start at the beginning of a season until this year? Him being out of it was a huge blow...then Williams imploding and Rushc not doing anything right just added to it. By the time it became clear Wood and Miller weren't going to be back by June, everything fell apart. That's not a plan that fell apart because "everything had to go right." That's a plan that fell apart because 5 very different and very important things went wrong.
