However, if Klinsi wanted complete, final decision making authority on everything from roster selection to friendly scheduling and youth development, USSF was spot on in denying him those things, because at the end of the day, that isn't the job of the USMNT manager. That's way, waaaay too much control asked of someone who's done nothing to deserve it.

Isn't that what he had in Germany? And isn't he credited(with a couple others) for putting them in the outstanding position they're in today?

He had control of his staff, not of overall operations of the national team. He put Low in charge of tactics, which was his best move-identifying a fantastic assistant and giving him free reign.

The overhaul of Germany's youth development system had nothing to do with Klinsi.

Okay. I only had something I saw or read during World Cup time to go on, and that may have actually been Klinsmann himself talking.

Yeah. Klinsman was on the WWL during the World Cup talking about that. There was also a detailed link posted in here that was written by Klinsi.

Regardless of how much credit he claimed or deserves, there are enough serious questions about Klinssmann tactically to warrant not hiring him. He has one mode - attack. When that fails he tries to attack more and it led to some laughable formations at Bayern. Also, those specific decisions affected one person's position at the club even more than it affected his own: Landon Donovan.

USS is spot on about MLS. Making the USMNT good isn't their goal, but by producing a handful of exportable players each year, they'll make tidy profits, which is their goal. They've already realized that with the huge gains they've made on Altidore, Guzan, Edu etc.

Another great sign is that MLS is already producing some quality, quality coaching. Jason Kreis could be the best American manager of all-time when it's all said and done. RSL is an incredibly managed, well-oiled machine without the benefit of any high priced stars.

Next if we could only develop some referees.

Klinsi is real good at self promotion. That's been a bit of a red flag this time around.

Mexico's national soccer federation has suspended Carlos Vela and Efrain Juarez for six months and fined 11 other players for violating its code of conduct.

Of course this would never happen prior to anything major.

Don't look now but the Sounders are up 2-0 on Monterrey and are about to become the first US based team to win on Mexican soil.

I'm watching right now, waiting for the inevitable red card/PK/collapse a la RSL a couple weeks ago.

ESPN has hired Ian Darke to be its lead voice on all soccer platforms, including USMNT, USWNT, EPL, select MLS, and World Cup '14.

Awesome.

In other fantastic news, my daughter and I will be in the first row behind the north goal on October 9th for the Poland game.

Bradley left foots a solid finish off a good build up vs Schalke for his first goal of the year. Patented Mike, following the play with a deep run into the box.

Btw, I was impressed with the rookie Tim Ream last night v the Galaxy. His positioning and composure was very nice. Marked Buddle and then Donovan when he moved up late in the match. New York is for real. Marquez is the best central midfielder in the league, Ream is solid, Richards' speed is a game changer and obviously the two best pure strikers in the league don't hurt your chances either. I'd love to see them in a final against RSL and see what Kreis can do to stop them. The Marquez-Morales match up would be something to see.

Mikey's goal was one of his better finishes. Players scuff or sky that shot all the time, but Mikey's technique was perfect.

Ream is very, very intelligent. Calm on the ball. I'd like to see him and Gonzalez as the pairing in the Camp Cupcake game. I like the combo of size and skill between the two.

I was at the Fire/Sounders game last night, and hoo boy, the Fire are terrible. No one on that team wants to shoot. SSFC had a travelling group of 300 or so fans that brought it all game. It was a fun time.

You know who's in blisteringly good form right now?

Benny Feilhaber.

He has like 6 goals in his last 3 games or something, and his latest was an injury-time free kick game winner.

Yes, its the Danish 2nd division, but its still good form.

If we aren't looking at a 5 man midfield, we're nuts. The depth can help give Donovan and Dempsey a little rest, since we're going to need to save their legs if they are to be useful by 2014.

You could line up:

Bedoya-Holden-Benny

Mikey

Edu

or

Donovan-Benny-Dempsey

Mikey

Jones

And that's not including guys like Torres, Dikserud, Seba Lleget, Ryan Smith, Rico Clark or anyone else that I'm leaving out.

Five man midfield is a must. It covers our weaknesses and highlights our strengths. That's all there is to it.

Our best line up is this:

-----------------------------Th-----------------------

-Cherundolo/Franklin--Gooch--DeMerit--Bocanegra

-----------------Jones--------Mikey------------------

------Dempsey----------Stu-----------Donovan-------

-----------------------Altidore----------------------

That's if the world cup was starting today (and Gooch was healthy). We have a ton of midfielders coming through that are too good to leave on the bench in lieu of some scrub striker.

Yeah Benny dominating in a league that makes MLS look world class isn't anything to scoff at because I love what it says about his attitude and the mere fact that he's maintained health for the better part of a year is great.

Here's Benny's goal, a nasty, bending free kick at the 1:55 mark of the clip: http://watchsocceronline.blogspot.com/2010/09/feilhaber-scores-game-winning-goal-for.html

5 goals and 5 assists in his last 3 games.

Directv/soccer question. The 10 or so dedicated UEFA channels (480-489) Directv has are outstanding, but for some reason I cannot always DVR them. Last night I DVRed the AC Milan-Ajax and the Real Madrid-Auxerre games. However, when I went to watch them last night, only the Real game was available. For some reason, it said I did not have access to the channel the Milan game was on. This has happened once before, too. Anyone know what the issue is or had this happen? I thought all the channels were complimentary, so I should be able to DVR all of them, right?

I've had a similar problem DVRing them. My theory is that some of the games are also being aired on FSC and FSC+. Those channels are then blacked out in the 480s if you don't have FSC, as I do not.

On a somewhat related note, Comcast Sportsnet aired the Chelsea champions league match live yesterday.

Ah. . .that theory is possible and would make some sense. I don't have FSC or FSC+ either. Far better theory than anything I could come up with (I was wondering if for some reason 480-485 were DVRable but nothing higher -- which would be illogical, but still).

Really? That's totally random. Suppose I'll have to check Comcast in the future for soccer (at least Champions League).
