George Ofman said Wells does not want to sign with the Bllue Jays after next year he has already told them he wants to go to Texas. He thought if the Cubs offered Barrett they would take it in a heart beat. He also mentioned one the Cubs scouts used to work for the Blue Jays and he was instrumental in drafting Wells.I know Ofman is off base more than not but thought it was an interesting trade rumor to share.

If Toronto makes a offer of Wells for Barrett, then the Cubs better jump all over that.
Only if they can sign Wells to a long-term extension. Not if he's going to walk after next year.

He can solidify our hold on 5th place for this year.

Provided you can sign Wells to an extension..you do this deal in a heartbeat.

Simply put...(if healthy) Wells will play in 150+ games a season vs.

130+ for Barrett.

However, you must go out then and get a leadoff secondbaseman.

Luis Castillo would be my choice.

This isn't a bad lineup

Castillo

Murton

Lee

Ramirez

Wells

Jones

Blanco

Izturis

A little right handed heavy..you could always move Jones up in the order

to break up the righties.

Blanco is not a everyday catcher. He is a solid backup.

If Toronto gets Barrett, then why not go out and sign Bengie Molina?

Which is offset in your scenario by 130+ games of Blanco. Wells isn't that much better than Barrett, and especially when you consider the difference in what they'll be paid.

Agreed. Keep Barrett and use the money saved to upgrade another position.

Even better, if you're desperate to turn Barrett into offensive production, you can dump Pierre, move Jacque to center, sign a big bat for right field or make a trade, and move Michael to left field. Might take a little winter ball to get it down, but I think he could handle left.
