Ceda as a Cub: 8 IP, 1.13 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, .188 BAA, 15 K, 3 BB.

Ceda is 5th in the AZL with his 46 Ks.

Mark Holliman's 108 Ks is good for a tie at 4th in the FSL.

Holliman previously topped out at 113 IPs (college) in '05 and is currently at 127. I don't believe in absolutes in pitch counts or innings. But Holliman was cruising earlier and then hit a wall for awhile, and it wouldn't surprise me if part of that was because he's pitching more innings at a higher level than he has before. Pitching a full season is not easy.

Agreed, and that fits with what some scouts who have projected him as a big league reliever have said. But he's had 2 good starts in a row (8/12: 6.1 IP, 1 ER, 5/1; 8/7: 7 IP, 3 ER, 5/1).

I believe Petrick can come off of the DL today, can't he? If he does, is there any chance he'll get the starting nod?

I'm sure Billy would be starting if he did come off the DL. I doubt he's right with the possibility that he'll come off today, though.

Jim Callis chat at BA:

Q: Bryan from Chicago asks:

As a Cubs fan, I am disappointed with the peformances of Angel Guzman, Carlos Marmol, and Sean Marshall. Do they have any other pitching prospects in the system that I should be excited about?

A: Jim Callis: Don't be too disappointed -- rookie pitchers are going to be inconsistent. The best pitching prospect that the Cubs have in the minors right now is lefty Donald Veal, who is progressing rapidly. Sean Gallagher also has taken a nice step forward with his stuff this year.

Q: David from Toronto asks:

Jim, love your columns, but I have a concern. As a huge Cub fan, I can't help but notice your comments are getting bleaker and bleaker... Do you not think that had Mark Prior and Derrek Lee been even moderately healthy, that they wouldn't be in the thick of the weak NL playoff race?

A: Jim Callis: Maybe. But how can you count on Mark Prior being even moderately healthy until he shows he can go a full season without getting injured? Losing Derrek Lee hurt, but I still see a very flawed team even if he had been in there for the full year.

Q: Adam from Austin, TX asks:

What does Sean Gallagher have to do to gain some respect from the various baseball outlets? He's 20 years old and doing quite well at Double A and yet when talk of the Cubs top pitching prospects comes you rarely hear is name mentioned.

A: Jim Callis: I mentioned him a few minutes ago, Adam! His stuff has taken a nice step forward this year, whereas last year it was pretty average and didn't look like there was much room for projection.

And of course, the mandatory Jessica Alba reference in a Jim Callis chat:

Q: Todd from Boston asks:

How cool is your job that you can get paid to answer questions about baseball here and on ESPN.com? Can you think of any better jobs that don't include oiling up Jessica Alba?

A: Jim Callis: I do have a great job -- you won't ever catch me saying otherwise. Even when I'm swamped, I'm still working in baseball.

Or unless they sneak in the back door if Chattanooga heats up and wins both halves.
