Emergency callup Ryan O'Malley shut out the Astros for eight innings to win his major league debut on Wednesday.

O'Malley deserves a lot of credit here, but it was another pathetic showing from the Astros, who scored in just two of 36 innings while getting swept at home by one of baseball's worst teams. The 26-year-old O'Malley, who couldn't have found out about the assignment until after midnight last night, allowed five hits, walked six and struck out two in an 109-pitch outing. There's a good chance he's earned himself additional starts, if not right away then in September, but he isn't currently recommended in NL-only leagues.

I agree with everything said here.

1. In a small sample (one game), being very lucky can make a mediocre performance look very, very good. There were a LOT of balls hit very hard but right at people today.

2. Are you disputing the notion that the Cubs are one of baseball's very worst teams?

NL-only leagues?

The site the quote is from is for fantasy baseball information. Some fantasy baseball leagues are aligned by NL or AL only....

True, but same can be said for the Cubs. Pettitte was giving up a ton of 390 foot fly balls to center field today

Oh god no! I just thought it was funny that's all.

I honestly didn't see that many hard hit balls off of him. Yea there were a lot of fly balls but that doesn't mean they were all hit hard. Maybe 2 or 3 went to the track, but that is normal to see one or two pretty much every game. I think he was very good at locating the ball low when he missed and not getting the ball up too much besides to that Biggio guy who kills the Cubs. Best of all the Cubs staff has possibly found out that you can be good with out throwing 100 mph. He threw a good change today and kept the batters off sitting on his fast ball. I dont think he is going to be great, but I could see him being a useful pitcher if he can get a chance. I would rank him 5th of the 7 new pitchers this year.

Please don't rain on O'Malley's performance. He DID still go 8 innings of shut-out ball. I don't care if you want to nit-pick it or not, it was still an impressive outing for a rookie making his debut. And what matters is...NOT ONE ASTRO cross the plate. So, regardless of how many "balls hit very hard but right at people" there were, the fact remains he didn't allow a run.

When did we start calling a future Hall of Famer "that Biggio guy?"

When this site decided we couldn't use the other obscene names I usually refer to him by.

O'Malley pitched a great game, but let's not begin thinking that he is already in the '07 rotation. It's one start, and it was a very good one. But the majors over the years have been full of first start wonders only to have them flame out. Plus, he beat the Astros, who may be just as offensively challenged as the Cubs.

We would not be cubs fans if we didn't do this.

Wow the second half of that sounds like a Baker quote when explaining why he keeps playing Nefiei "because he is hitting the ball hard"
