Probable Starters:

Iowa: RHP Angel Guzman (4-4, 4.04 ERA, 75.2 IP) @ RHP Ricardo Rodriguez (6-10, 5.19 ERA)

West Tenn: LHP Issac Pavlik (1-0, 1.65 ERA, 16.1 IP) @ LHP Scott Elbert (4-2, 3.34 ERA)

Daytona: RHP Justin Berg (6-6, 4.68 ERA, 98 IP) - returns from DL

Peoria: RHP Joel Santo (1-2, 5.02 ERA, 14.1 IP, overall: 7-8, 5.33 ERA, 106.1 IP) vs. RHP Matt Kniginyzky (8-4, 3.36 ERA)

Boise: LHP Mark Pawelek (1-4, 2.88 ERA, 34.1 IP, 30/16, 11 HBP, 1.32 WHIP)

Mesa: RHP Alberto Albuquerque (0-2, 5.68 ERA, 12.2 IP) & RHP Greibal Cuevas-Novas (0-0, 5.14 ERA, 7 IP)

*Take Mesa's probable starter with a grain of salt as they shuffle their pitchers around with frequency.

Guzman: 77/24, 1.27 WHIP

Pavlik: 10/3, 0.98 ERA

Berg: 76/46, 1.56 WHIP

Santo (Peoria): 12/8, 1.33 WHIP

Santo (Peoria & Ft. Wayne): 60/62, 1.59 WHIP

Pawelek: 30/16, 1.32 WHIP

Albuquerque: 15/10, 1.58 WHIP

Cuevas-Novas: 7/4, 1.71 WHIP

Should we assume a different starter?

If they're actually going to bring Guzman up, it would probably be O'Malley. He'd be on normal rest and won't start tomorrow because of Marshall's rehab start.

Wade Miller got the start for West Tenn tonight and was pitching OK, but his fastball was around 82-83 all night. Looks like a rehab signing that didn't work out for the Cubs.

Who do you think could be our "rehab guy" next year?

2004: Ryan Dempster

2005: Scott Williamson

2006: Wade Miller

Just thought I would chime in but Fox is playing LF tonight, just got back from Jacksonville and they are short position players. Dope is done for the year, Nic Jackson is mending and might be back. Cates who hit the inside the park homer the other night really messed up his hand.

what a joke..yes...I realize that Hendry only gave him 1 mil..but tossin

money around like that adds up.

Rush 2.5 million

Perez 2.5 million

miller 1 million

thats 6 million we could have got Furcal with the extra $$$..or another

starter..Millwood/Rodgers..etc.

what a turd of a GM hendry is.

Wow. Thanks for the update! Ron had said the other night that Cates hurt his hand sliding into home on that play.

That's really too bad about Dopirak, but at least he's been checked out. Is there any update on what they found?

Hopefully they can get some reinforcements soon.

A recent string of bad luck for those guys. I'm really sad to see Dope go down again, but he never got his power back and maybe can really rehab to be prepared for next year. I personally thought Cates was a fill-in and didn't seem to have much of a future with the Cubs. Glad to hear that there is some hope for Nic Jackson - man I want to see him stay healthy!

Anyone have any ideas on who will be headed towards West Tenn to take those roster spots?

Iowa is up 5-4 in the 8th. Mark Mulder (4 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 2 K) started on a rehab assignment against the I-Cubs and didn't look good.

West Tenn wins 4-2, they beat the Dodgers' top pitching prospect, Scott Elbert.

Daytona won 4-1.

Peoria down 2-1 in the 7th.

Pawelek is going up against Chris Tillman, a highly thought of prep prospect from Orange County who was drafted 49th overall this past June. Tillman is making his NWL debut.

Boise leads it 5-0 in the bottom of the 4th. Pawelek: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K, 6 GO - 3 FO. The announcer has noted that Mark was working tentatively his last time out, but working much more confidently today (attacking the hitters, etc.).

Did Dopirak get re-injured, or did they just shut him down for the year due to his lack of production and inability to generate any power off of his hurt ankle?

any on else think mark could be promoted sooner rather than later? His last 5 starts have been very impressive, and with a performance like tonight's I think he could help peoria out this year. His command seems to be there now which was a big question his first few outtings. From what I hear his stuff is nasty as well, so who knows maby I am jumping the gun, but it would be nice to see happen.

First off, his last start was bad. I don't think he should be promoted at all this season. More importantly than anything else, Mark needs to keep working on his mechanics and repeating his delivery, to keep his improved control going. I'd rather he stay with the pitching coach who helped him get out of his early-season slump to do that.
