It's hard to throw strikes with a fork sticking out of your back.

Maybe the combination of freak injuries and time off have just taken too much of a toll...

I see zero reason to not send him back down to the minors. I think a big part of this is mental, and he's not ready for the bigs again at this point...or at least I HOPE a big part of it is mental.

He really did look awful today, and not just pitching-wise. He looked real pale with dark circles around his eyes...just generally very sickly and pasty.

Maybe he was sick but didn't want to miss his start for fear of being ripped further by the fans and media. :?:

I can only hope he has that as an excuse because otherwise he just looked pathetic.

I think at this point fans should start thinking about Prior like they should think about Wood: Hope that he regains his earlier form, but don't expect it.

When was the last time he threw a breaking ball? I've seen maybe 2-3 starts of his, and it just seems like all fastballs and change ups to me.

He's definitely been throwing curveballs. In his last start, they looked pretty decent. Today, they didn't have much movement and he had no control on them.

Well if he goes the Wood route, we could have back end of the game with Prior and Wood...that would be pretty nasty if they were even close to healthy.

The problem I have is that prior to this game (no pun intended) I kept saying maybe this is all mental that he's just been a headcase since Game 6 of the '03 NLCS but now I'm starting to think he doesn't have it anymore. Honestly how can someone go from being so dominant to be so bad?

How can he be a headcase since Game 6 when his September '04 and most all of his 2005 were good?

I'm mystified. Being removed from the situation other than what I read, a minor league assignment looks like an option to me. It doesn't seem like whatever program he's on here is working and it's hard to tell from the quotes whether he and Rothschild are on the same page.

He looked like death warmed over today.

For some odd reason, I have a feeling he's trying to pitch hurt, and it's not working.

Poor guy's body is breaking down on him already and he's not even 30 yet.

I would be content to have 75% of the 2003 Mark Prior for a few years. Considering that 2003 Prior was a Cy Young candidate, 75% of that would be a solid 2 or 3 starter right now - something he isn't even close to being.

I guess I don't really see the point of sending him to Iowa. If he's not injured, he should continue to make his scheduled starts for the time being. The Cubs need to be able to evaluate what they have with Prior going into next year. I don't consider shutting him down as an option (again, assuming he's not injured). He needs to pitch through it IMO. The Cubs aren't playing for anything at this point so there is no harm in letting him take some lumps at the big league level rather then sending him to Iowa.

I would say that I am officially worried about his future at this point.

Looks like his shoulder is still bothering him. From Rotoworld:

Mark Prior-S- Cubs Aug. 11 - 8:58 am et

It is questionable if Mark Prior's shoulder will be healthy enough for him to make his next scheduled start.

Prior will meet with pitching coach Larry Rothschild on Friday or Saturday to determine if he will be able to start. ''The problem has been in the shoulder, leading up to when he came off the DL," Rothschild said. "Whether there's still weakness there and that's the reason he's under pitches..." He gave up five earned runs in three innings on Thursday.

Just shut him down already. Get him healthy for next year. This year is meaningless.

I think we're getting close to just shutting Mark down for the year and letting the rookies continue to audition for 2007...

nah brah, we're still in this! gotta keep in the wild card race can't shut down our horses.

i think he's injured, too, but cubs brass is too stubborn to shut him down.
