    • The Cubs will get closer than 9.5 games out of the wild card, but not closer than 16 under .500.

The Cubs had several hot hitters for that stretch. With what would appear to be 4 rookie starters and cooling off bats I have a hard time seeing them getting closer.

4 straight losses, then 3 straight wins, and we're almost right back where we started. Do the Cubs have it in them to create a new high water mark on Friday?

That's 4 straight wins actually :D. If the Reds lose tonight, we will be as close to the WC as we have been this season in a while-9 games even, so that will eliminate the first two options of the poll. Like you said, if we win on Friday, we will satisfy the other part of the poll and be 15 or less under .500-let's go take those Cardinals again!

Oops, I was just reading off the Cubs.com schedule and they hadn't put today's W up yet, so yes, we are literally right back where we started.

They still suck.

And so does just about every other team ahead of us.

When you can beat the Stros with a couple callups against Clemens and Pettite? Something ain't right, man. Now with the Mets having a load of top guys on the DL or struggling --- this entire league is just complete junk. Not a single decent team anywhere.

I've never seen anything like it. I think we can pull closer -- just because there's nothing out there to prevent a terrible team like the Cubs from looking better than it is.

I would call Cincy decent. The Cards are decent. The Dodgers are more than decent, and despite the injuries, you can't deny that the Mets are very good. Most everybody else is mediocre. But the Cubs suck.

Closing in on 3 weeks since reaching the 16 under / 9.5 games back mark, and the Cubs are now 22 under and 12.5 back, having tied the previous mark once.

The Cubs would have to go 20-12 to finish the season better than 16 games under .500, that's a .625 W%. Theoretically they could win 7 in a row starting now and beat the mark. 9.5 games back of the wild card is a little more attainable, but considering none of the front-runners have been any good of late and the Cubs are still losing ground, it might be a longshot.
