If the Cubs were 9.5 games out and only one or two teams were ahead of them, I'd think that there would be a chance considering how putrid the league as a whole is. But with 11 teams ahead of them, no way Jose.

Or even if it was a month ago....there's just not enough time now either.

Yup-I think 85 wins will probably win the wildcard this year, so we'd have to go 38-13 the rest of the way to do that-which is simply not very likely.

This is from Paul Sullivans article this morning, and even though I've been right there for it, it's just kind of stunning to see it written this way...

Although they've played their best stretch of baseball over the last two weeks, the Cubs appear likely to finish 10 or more games out of first place for the 15th time in their last 17 seasons.

12 of those seasons under the watch of Andy MacPhail, whose goal for the team has been to "contend within the division", a pathetically sad goal that they haven't been able to accomplish.

It not so stupid to believe.

Sooo...the Cubs could go on a tear, beating all these teams that they haven't been beating the rest of the season, meanwhile none of the 11 teams above them will play well at all, just milling around waiting for the Cubs to take the lead. Maybe we have an easy schedule, but so does everyone else...why? Because the NL is terrible.

The Cubs do not control their own destiny. Not even close. Even if they suddenly start playing like the best team to ever play the game, there are other teams that don't have to play that well to stay ahead of us.

I'm not sold.

I believe!!!! Wouldn't it be something if we make the playoffs and the team on the south side of town doesn't?

Wouldnt it be something if we could go a whole day without someone talking about a team that has absoloutley no bearing on ours?

I have a ton of Sox fans who have been giving me hell for two years, so it would have a bearing on my life. It shut them up for a while...I'm sure I'm not alone.

It's a little better than a 1 in 1000 chance.

I'd buy a lottery ticket if I had a 1 in 1000 chance, but I wouldn't plan on seeing baseball on the north side in October.

I would bet a lot of money that there will be baseball on the north side in October.

I still wouldn't plan on seeing that game. :D

It would just be nice to see the team keep playing the way they have recently. While I am a delusional Cub fan (called so on this site) just dumb enough to believe that this team has a future, I don't think that future is now.

Good play now makes me more excited for next year.

The Cubs still have a chance, and really, 9.5 games isn't that much ground to make up (just ask the 69 Mets). If we win four straight we could feasibly be just 5.5 games out.

This is highly unlikely, of course, but there's a chance.

Now with that said, this happens all the time. The Cubs play a good stretch of games, get me all excited, then proceed to lose their next 8.

Right. So just expect the 8 game loosing streak. That's easier instead. .

Well if they made the playoffs, they would probably be the favorites to not only go to the WS but to win it all.

Zambrano would most likely throw 130 pitches and start every single game if we went to the playoffs. We'd be favorites to win the world series for sure then, but it would probably kill Zambrano.

I would probably be willing to sacrifice him at this point.

Just like the cow in Apocalypse Now. Sorry, El Toro.
