I like the play of Izzy at short

kinda off topic, but izturis looked terrible defensively yesterday.

Did he? I didn't see much of the game yesterday and didn't hear that. I forgot to DVR the game. How'd he look terrible. I see the Cubs didn't make any errors yesterday. Explain....Thanks.

let a foul pop drop (which led to hill's only walk) and bobbled bay's (?) ground ball, but was fortunate enough to recover and get him by a half step.

Doesn't sound that terrible of a day? I guess you had to see it...

It wasn't that terrible of a day. That foul ball was one of those tough plays near the mound and stands-it was a play Izturis should have made only because he is so good defensively-but as Len and Bob mentioned, he is still learning how unique the foul territory is in Wrigely, so that's not that big of a deal. The bobble was more concerning to me, but he did recover to make the out, so it wasn't that big of a deal either. At most, you can call it a terrible day for Izturis-he won't make even those defensive lapses all that often. BTW, a bright spot of the day also was that Cedeno finally looked comfortable playing 2nd base-he really looked better out there.

for izturis, who is supposed to be the second coming defensively, i'd consider a day with two misplays to be a bad day.

but back to hill's greatness...don't want to divert the thread too much. :D

I read this morning (I forgot where) that Cedeno is starting to feel comfortable and perfer 2nd base.

A hard hit ground ball that takes a tough hop on him is hardly a misplay. He played the ball of the chest, just as he is supposed to and made a very strong throw to first without even really setting his feet to get a good runner in Bay.

I know a great majority of fans here don't like Izturis and the trade but it doesn't mean you should now try to find reasons to criticize him unfairly.

That was a play, that if committed by Ronny Cedeno would have been called sloppy, lazy and ill prepared. It was a routine ground ball to short.

This is funny! Was the played made? Yes! I've never seen so many comments on a bobbled play that was made for a out.

I'm not the one claiming he's a genius with the glove though. Obviously he's not the super human defender so many wanted to make him out to be. He's not going to win games for the Cubs with his glove. And he's not going to contribute to many wins with his bat either.

It was one of two plays discussed, and it's hardly the first misplay of his stint in Chicago.

you're both right. Baker would be too critical of the play if committed by Ronny, posters are being too critical of the play since it was committed by Izturis.

he ended up getting the out on the grounder, but he looked far from graceful doing it.

Too bad baseball doesn't give you additional points on style and grace.

Yes, we are being too criticial because it was Izturis. But that's the point. You can't fluff up a guy's defensive reputation based on silly anecdotes from his previous manager and the hype king of LA, and then expect people to ignore the signs that he really is just like everybody else, and not a defensive stud. I wouldn't normally criticize a SS like that, but, that play, and the others he's misplayed in the week since arriving, are an indication that his reputation may be a bit ahead of his actual game.

He corrected himself well on the bobble though and that's an important thing IMO.

They also don't give you extra points based on how many flowery adjectives you can use to describe a player's defense even when he really isn't anything special in relation to all the other major league shortstops.

Jesus Christ, give the kid a break! He is learning where to go in foul territory on the pop ups. He also got the out at first on the grounder.

If it wasn't for negative comments some of the people on here would be the silent type.

Izturis was unwanted because he's been bad at the plate. Fair enough. So he goes out and has a good day at the plate, and what's being talked about? His below average day in the field. God, some people always have to bitch about something.

No it wasn't...it was hard hit and took a funny hop up to his chest right at the end. He played it correctly, got in front and played it off his chest and fired a bullet to first.

That was NOT a routine ground ball.

He's sucked at the plate all year, all his career and ever since he arrived. People try to gloss over that by pretending his defense more than makes up for it, yet he hasn't shown to be anything more than your typical major league SS.

And that's something else. We're talking about 6 games here. Izturis hasn't hit well, but has looked good at the plate in most of his at bats (2 or 3 times he's hit hard low line drives right at people already). He has done his job in the field, but hasn't looked particularly good doing it yet. Both of these seem to contrast with the reports on him, and so we just need to wait and see what continues and what doesn't. I'm happy with his work at the plate the last two days (even if the stats don't show it for Saturday, he still helped the team twice)-and we'll see about his defense at Wrigely-we just don't know enough to be sure of anything yet.
