I'v seen people post about the 2002 draft on numerous ocassions but still can't find anything out about our second pick Clanton. So what ever happened to him? Was he ever any good at all or was he one of those phantom first round picks to avoid paying the big bucks i.e Luis Montanez? Is he still under contract by the cubs? Any info would be great as I've been wondering about this for a long time.

I hadn't really given him much thought, but I did some searching and found some interesting stuff. There's so much crazy stuff I'll let you read the article for yourself:

Man, that kid is paranoid beyond belief. No team would have given him the money the Cubs did, and then tell him not to pitch, That is complete crap, and he knows it. He is upset his career never took off, and he is bitter about it. I mean even before the draft, Clanton had a questionable character, and this just proves those doubters right. I have no doubt that Clanton is in the wrong, because why is he the only one to come forward and nobody else has? I mean, Christensen, Sisco, and a few others who left the Cubs org under less then good terms, could have back up Clanton's stories. The kid needs to shut up, take the money he Eddie Robinson'd from the Cubs, and enjoy his life.

What is the full story on Sisco? What did he do or say when he was in the Cubs' organization?

I believe The Cubs beef with Sisco was the fact that he came to spring training way out of shape something like 30 lbs over what he had been. I'm sure there is more that I don't remember about him

but about clanton, after reading that article it seems that the cubs really didn't do their homework on the guy. If he was already hurting and losing velocity than why draft him? (and why draft Brownlie after him?) his college coach said that he had told a number of teams about his arm soarness but that the Cubs never called to find out. Add in the character flaws and you've got a recipe for disaster.

A few things happened to him. In his last season with the Cubs in Daytona, his stuff and performance were decidedly not up to par for a guy with his level of talent. Secondly, there was a much-rumored confrontation he had with Jae-Kuk Ryu over who had a larger signing bonus (side note: it was Ryu), which resulted in Sisco taking a swing at Ryu with his right hand, missing, and hitting a wall, breaking his hand. Finally, he was massively out of shape when he wasn't rostered. Reports had him weighing in at over 300 pounds.

According to interviews done with Hendry and Fleita, they wanted to send a message to Sisco by not placing him on the 40 man. The thought was that it would get him in line. Unfortunately, the Royals jumped on him in the Rule 5 Draft.

Given Sisco's performance last year, I was surprised he didn't begin 2006 in AA as a starter. I think its important to give young guys innings to develop consistency.

Relief pitcher's stats typically fluctuate wildly from year to year due to the small sample size and their lack of game time reps.

Perhaps he would never have developed into a starter, but it looks like the Royals will be left with a mediocre relief pitcher.

I agree that the Royals erred in not sending Sisco back to the minors to work on becoming a starter. Of course, with his make-up issues, Sisco may not have handled the demotion well.
