I think he could win it but I don't think he will win it.

that sounds like something joe morgan would say.

Hey, hey, hey. Completely unnecessary.

I answered the question. Could Barrett win the batting title? Yes, he could. It is possible. Do I think he will? No.

And for the record, Joe Morgan would say he hasn't seen Barrett play enough to know if he could win the batting title.

I think he has 337 PA's now, since he had 333 coming into this game. You need about 344 to qualify.

You need 502 PA to qualify to win the title.

Yes, when all is said and done, you need 502 PA to qualify for the batting title, but what I meant was he needed 344 PA to qualify at that time. The Cubs had only played 111 games at that time.

Wow-if there weren't any better anectdotal evidence to the ineptitude of the Cubs re: OBP-this team could have the worst offense in baseball for two years running AND have the batting title winner for both years.

But OBP doesn't matter, right Jim?

What other year were we last in the league? Last year we were much closer to the middle then to last.

They were last in walks, but 11th in OBP (out of 16 NL teams) thanks to ranking 3rd in AVG (2nd in SLG). They were .005 away from last place, but .009 away from the midpoint. So, while they were closer to the middle in terms of rank, they were actually closer to last in terms of the actual number.

Combined over the past two years they probably will have the worst total OBP.

The lack of walks is, by far, the single greatest contributor to the poor offensive performance during the Dusty Baker era. They've had good batting averages and bad averages. They've hit well with RISP and poorly with RISP. They've hit for lots of power and no power. But they've consistently been at or near the bottom of the barrell in the NL in the walks department (14th, 14th, 16th, 16th). It's a huge problem, they refuse to admit it and fix it, and far too many fans and experts accept that as perfectly OK since the walk just isn't the manly thing to do.

perfectly put. everyone needs to read this post.

Agreed.

Wouldn't it be pretty awesome for Mauer and Barrett to win in it the same year?

YES indeed it would be.

I'm totally pro BARE BARE. Among other concerns, I hope Dusty sees that he gets enough atbats; given that he's the best hitter on the team, that shouldn't be a problem.

According to Yahoo he needs 331 PA's to qualify, and with just the AB's and walks he's got 318. I don't know how many sacrafices he's got but he's closing in on being qualified rather quickly.

He might not get the ABs to qualify. Len & Bob were discussing it yesterday and said you need 3.1 AB per game to qualify and after yesterdays game he was something like 6 AB below. They were saying that he would need a few games with 5-6 ABs and not miss too many more games.

Status Update:

368 PA

Through the game on 8/15 the cubs had played 119 games.

8/16 marks game #120, meaning a need of 372 PA. Four in tonight's game, and he is at the required mark.
