Cubs get Hee sop Choi

Red Sox get Henry Blanco

Cubs promote Soto to back up Barrett and save some money.

Cubs then DFA Mabry and call up Hoffpaur

Hoffpauir is hitting around .250 at AAA after his hot start...he's really been struggling. I wouldn't call him up.

I would trade Nevin a.s.a.p. to get full "value" (if he is added after 9/1 he would not be eligible for the playoff roster), tread water with Mabry until September 1, and call up Hoffpaur for a look. One month wouldn't hurt him, I don't think. If he plays well, his trade value goes way up going into the offseason. Definitely a high risk- high reward issue.

It's no doubt Boston needs a catcher on the news that Tek has a torn meniscus in his knee and will need surgery. That's usually a 6 week limitation to starting physical activity. Blanco is a nice idea given need for a good signal caller and defender.

? I heard it was just a cartilage tear.

About the same thing..the meniscus is made up of cartilage.

It's cartilage. I should know, I pretend to be a doctor sometimes.

I have never liked Hee Seop Choi all that much and always found him way overrated and don't want the Cubs to take another shot with him.

A little note: His .140 isoD in AAA and MLB career isoD (915 AB's) of .109 are very good but weren't good enough for Theo Epstein. That's saying something.

The Cubs would have to put Blanco on waivers, and he would probably get claimed before he reached Boston's turn.

With the Red Sox about to get Lopez it's a moot point but why would anyone claim Blanco on waivers? Teams usually stay out of each other's way when it comes to waiver deals unless the player is too good to pass up.

I'd be all for Choi. Who doesn't want a (near) .800 OPS sitting on the bench when possible?

Apparently all MLB GM's are passing on him, including Beane. That really should tell you something.

It's called pinch hitting not pinch walking. I think it would drive Dusty nuts to watch him take so many pitches.

I'll say one thing about Hendry ... between Sisco, Choi, Cruz and Hill he's got a pretty good handle on which of our prospects are the most overrated. Everyone talks about him not selling high, but he certainly sold high when it comes to Choi and Hill.
