I assume that the nationals are going to try like no other to lock him up prior to the offseason, since they decided not to trade him. However, if for whatever reason they fail to do so, I would hope Jim Hendry would make a strong push for him. I really dont want to see a Cedeno-Izturis infield next year. That would be ugly.

I never was a fan of soriano but with the numbers he's putting up in RFK, he's changed my mind. I want him at second for the cubs next year. Plz.

as i said somewhere else, to make this offense passable, the cubs have to get soriano for 2b. you just have to live w/ the fact that the cubs don't care about OBP, so you have to hope they accidentally stumble upon the guy with the best SLG.

the Cubs could still push for a Soriano trade now since the Pirates are the only NL team who can actually claim Soriano over them on the waiver wire.

If the Cubs make an offseason push for Soriano, it will be for LF. Hendry has been Jonesing for Izturis/Cedeno combo since last winter.

Probably not even the Pirates in a couple of weeks.

That is an amazing point. But why trade for him when you get him as an FA this winter? I'd hate to rent him in a season that was long ago lost and have to give up something like Marmol and Hill to do so.

Not to rain on the parade but I think Hendry said yesterday, while talking to Len and Bob, that the Cubs would not be making any big player trades for the remainder of the season. of course, that doesn't hold a lot of water since Hendry doesn't openly discuss such things but thought it was worth mentioning.

I still have a feeling that Hendry is going to go after a guy like zito or schmidt or perhaps both. I think he wants all pitching and defense. although I think he does recognize he needs a Power bat in LF next year. Unfortunately that probably means Lee.

the one thing I did like that Hendry said today on Sean and Steve was that he wants to let the kids pitch to see what he has. He compared the situation to the Tigers of a few years ago.

That would be the cheap way to get him via trade, but I have a feeling Bowden will foolishly hold onto him and watch him walk in the offseason. I wonder what we could sneak through in order to send back to them. I doubt the Pirates would make a claim, but I think the Nats would withdraw the waiver if they did.

The Nats will try to resign him, but they are comfortable letting him walk since they will get significant picks for him. Bowden believes he does a better job drafting players than most and values those picks over what he was being offered before the deadline.

I don't get why you think this is the case. What makes you think he was after Izturis before? He was hard after Furcal, but I don't recall anything about Izturis.

Problem with that logic is that the player/players the Cubs want to send to Washington for Soriano also have to clear waivers and have to get past all the teams at the bottom before they get to Washington's place in the standings

There are only 2 teams worse than the Nats -- the Cubs and Pirates. We'd just have to sneak guys by the Bucs.
