Mateo's Minor League Career

Mateo's 2006 at West Tenn

Note that he has about 310 career innings in the minors and was a reliever until midway through last season in Daytona. He missed a few starts earlier this season due to a hip injury.

He had a pretty good K rate last year. Anyway to get starting/relief splits?

He has a fairly good HR/9 over his career, I think that's why I assumed he'd be a ground ball pitcher.

Could it maybe have something to do with the number of times Ryu and Guzman are called up? Maybe with the number of options left? Don't know, just grasping here.

If he's in the pen, who starts Thursday?

Oh, and why is he going to the pen?

Probably Guzman.

Probably because he'd be on 8 days rest for his big league debut/first start, probably not the best way to start his big league career. And also because a guy like Guzman would be the better candidate to start.

"Most of the kids who are semi-ready are here already," Baker said. "We had hoped [Angel] Guzman and [Jerome] Williams had done better in the minor leagues. They're struggling a little (both are 3-4 at Triple-A Iowa)."

But Juan Mateo is 7-4 with a 2.82 ERA and J.R. Mathes is 8-5 with a 3.23 ERA at Double-A West Tenn.

Yeah, I was shocked when I read that yesterday.

Then a little more shocked when I read that Mateo had been promoted.

So Mateo is not "semi-ready"? Then, what is he? Not ready?

I don't think he's ready.

Cubs.com[/url]"] The Cubs added right-handed pitcher Juan Mateo from Double-A West Tenn to the 25-man roster to help in the bullpen for now. The Cubs had an opening on the roster with the trade of Todd Walker to the San Diego Padres on Monday.

Mateo, 23, was 7-4 with a 2.82 ERA in 18 games, including 17 starts, with the Diamond Jaxx. He was originally signed by the Cubs on July 3, 2001, and was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the Rule 5 Draft. The Cardinals returned Mateo earlier this year. He was supposed to pitch Monday, but was pulled out of the game and told he was going to the big leagues.

"I feel happy to be back because this is the team I started with," Mateo said.

Baker said they have not decided on a starter for Thursday, who will fill Greg Maddux's spot. One option was Glendon Rusch, but he was needed Monday to pitch two innings in relief of Mark Prior.

"We're taking it one day at a time with the pitching," Baker said.

The Triple-A Iowa team is in Las Vegas, and getting anyone to Chicago on short notice is tough. Sean Gallagher was a candidate. He was 4-0 with a 2.30 ERA in 13 games for Class A Daytona, and is 5-3 with a 3.14 ERA at Double-A West Tenn.

"It was an emphatic 'no,'" Baker said. "They said it would be rushing him too much. He's pitched very well in A-ball but struggled in Double-A."

Jerome Williams, who opened the season in the Cubs rotation, is 3-4 with a 4.08 ERA in 21 games, including 10 starts at Triple-A.

"Jerome is struggling, too," Baker said.

The Cubs already have two rookies in the starting rotation in Carlos Marmol and Rich Hill. They will likely have a third on Thursday.

"It's on-the-job training in the big leagues," Baker said. "That's difficult to do but necessary."

JR throws a sinking FB (no quote on velocity, but he doesn't throw hard), a curve and a change. He doesn't have a plus pitch, but generally has great control.

I'll be frank, I thought that by the time he was at AA, he'd be a reliever. He's proven me wrong.

I am very pleased that Dusty even knew who Gallagher was. That tells me that he is at least aware of the players in the minors. Would have been nice to see Sean up here on Thursday. :(

No, I'm glad the Cubs aren't rushing Gallagher.

I'm looking forward to seeing Gallagher pitching at Wrigley, but I'd like to see him have some more success in the high minors first. He still has some time. :)
