Now that George made a big splash by adding Abreu, what are the BoSox going to do to counter? I keep hearing rumblings of a 3-4 team deal possibly involving Lowell and Loretta.

Are they counting on Wells and Clement coming back strong, or do they make a play for pitching? Bullpen help maybe? If they move Lowell, are they targeting a 1B to move Youkilis to 3B? It's been relatively quiet on their front, but I don't expect Theo to just sit still. I have to believe they are going to strike big later tonight or sometime tomorrow.

That's a good question. Yesterday, I thought Boston would pull off some sort of 3-way deal involving sending Loretta to St. Louis, a prospect or two to Washington and Livan coming to the Sox. But with the Cardinals getting Belliard, what other contender is badly in need for a 2b? Now, I am still wondering if the Red Sox and A's will pull a Zito for prospects move.

Once word got around on Houston offering up Oswalt for Tejada, I'd bet they tried jumping in on that action.

Trot Nixon getting hurt isn't that huge of a problem since they have Willy Mo Pena to play RF. They have bigger problems in their starting pitching imho. Schilling generally will win you 2 of every 3 games, Beckett although a bit less consistent this year should be able to do the same. After that it's really a toss up - Lester has decent numbers, but if you watch his games, he's constantly letting alot of runners get on base - he seems to bear down and get out of innings, but they have to keep a pitch count reasonable for him which means he usually only goes 4-5 innings.

Wells is their big hope right now, but that's pinning alot on a guy his age with this year's injury problems. I personally think they've written off Clement and don't expect much if anything from him. They really need to get a solid starter and although they don't want to trade any of their young arms, I hear rumblings that if they have to give up Hanson to get Jason Schmidt, they may do it.

I heard as well that Lowell, Crisp and possibly Loretta are available as well. If they get a 1B out of a deal, Youkalis will move to 3B - Lugo is still in the picture and I know some of you have said they won't trade Crisp, I wouldn't count on it.

They're too close to winning the division to give in - they have no choice but to go for it.

I have been following the ESPN Rob Neyer chat, and Buster Onley broke in to report that the rumor is the Red Sox and Braves are talking about a trade that would swap Andruw Jones to the Sox for Coco Crisp, Craig Hansen and another prospect (likely to be Jon Lester).

If so, thats an interesting trade. I think the Sox would be giving up way too much, when they need starting pitching.

Jesus, why are the Braves always able to fleece other teams?

Yeah, bad trade for the BoSox.

Agreed but it could be possible if they know Nixon is lost for awhile. I don't think they have any confidence in Wily Mo.

And Theo ends up doing nothing.

I'm really surprised that they didn't make a move. Banking on Wells and Willy Mo, I guess.

Front page of ESPN has a story about the Red Sox trying to get Clemens. Apparently Clemens wanted to be traded to Boston, but everyone's favorite owner (McLane) thinks the Astros still have a shot at the playoffs.

Houston has, according to the simulations at BP and coolstandings, a 3-4% chance of making the playoffs. They should have been sellers, not buyers.

If Clemens wanted a good shot at the playoffs, he should've signed with the Red Sox to begin with. It's not like he signed before the season started, and didn't know what position the Astros were in. McClane owes nothing to the prick, and I'll be ecstatic if he's pitching meaningless games in September.

Yeah, I thought it was really odd that he signed with Houston knowing how bad they were/are.
