per rotoworld:

Bobby Abreu - OF - Phillies

The Yankees and Phillies were reportedly talking late into Friday night about a Bobby Abreu deal that might also include Jon Lieber or Cory Lidle.

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark has said that the Yankees could get a discount by taking the full contracts of both Abreu and Lieber, as there's been little interest in both players elsewhere. The Star-Ledger reports that the Phillies are now discussing second-tier Yankees prospects instead of Philip Hughes and Jose Tabata

Second tier if the Yankees take all of what those players are owed. Abreu is still owed $15 million for next year and there's a club option for $16 million on 07 or a buyout for $2 million. That alone is pretty steep, and they're wanting us to take a pitcher along with him. Lieber is still owed $7.5 million for next year. Lidle would be slightly more interesting since he's a FA after this season and he's got a smaller contract for the rest of this year, but that much money better make them come almost for free. That'd really handicap our try to bring in another quality pitcher.

I say we get Lieber so Dusty can run him back out there after an almost two hour rain delay and blow up his elbow again! Abreu would be nice too as long as you dont expect him to go homerun derby.

Wasn't it Baylor who did that?

And wasn't that the game that Lieber completed in something like 80 pitches?

The Cubs should jump in and get both Abreu and Lieber. They should be able to package Lieber to another team if they eat all of his salary. Hendry has to get creative to make this team competive for next season it's gonna need to be a good deadline for Hendry in terms of selling of his veterans and hopefully getting some pieces that can help now.

Walker

Perez

Mabry

Blanco

Maddux

Rusch

Pierre

Jones

Nevin

All of these guys could interest contedners and Hendry needs to sell these guys off now if not only to get talent in return but also to get the young talent we have a chance to play.

It definitely wasn't Baker.

Yes.

Man, cost-cutting trades like the one mentioned in the RotoWorld blurb where the Phillies don't get even one of Tabata or Hughes are ridiculous.

I've been a critic of getting Abreu, alot of that has been based on the notion that the 2008 option belonged to Abreu.

Cubs should jump on this. I'd do this trade, and I'd keep Leiber until I saw evidence that Prior would make 30+ starts.

Oh man, I'd take Leiber and Abreu and all their salaries.

-Need SP depth? Check.

-Need a slugging OF? Check.

-Are there any good FA OF's this winter? Nope.

This should be something we're all over.

The money would make things pretty tight. Abreu and Lieber would tie up $22.5 million of next year's budget, and by my count we've got about $30 million coming off of the books at the end of this year, and we've got both Z and Prior going to arbitration and both will likely get pretty good contracts.

Abreu not in the lineup tonight (only the 2nd time all year). Maybe he's on the move tonight.

it is true this would take up a good chunk of what comes off the books, but Prior will not get too good of a bump after his past two years and Hendry spent far less than anyone expected this year. if what we all hope happens, losing Dusty saves a good chunk too. I think there'd still be plenty of money to go get a big arm.

If anyone watched the BBTN show ... they have Abreu & Lidle destined for the Yankees with the Phillies picking up anywhere from 2 to 5 Yankees prospects not including Phillip Hughes or Jose Tabata.
