EDIT:

He is also hearing that the Red Sox are trying like heck to create a three-way deal.

He also said something about Betemit to NY yesterday, but acted as if they could get him for nothing.

I would be upset if the Yanks get Abreu for fringe prospects. The Cubs should be all over that type of deal.

Speed, Power, Defense and a great OBP.......... I can't think of a player who better suits the Cubs needs. His big contract and option pick up should only be a speed bump to Hendry going after him.

If those are true, the White Sox could really be in trouble.

Humberto Sanchez then to Washington. Who goes to Milwaukee from Minnesota? Slowey? Garza? Moses? I have a feeling it will only be Austin Jackson and a low level pitching prospect from the Yanks to Philly for Abreu. It should be at least Hughes and/or Tabata, though.

And what deal are the Red Sox trying to get involved in??

if lee goes to minnesota and soriano goes to detriot, i'm going to be an unhappy fantasy baseball gm.

why's that? What happens if you're in an NL only league and these guys are on your team? Are you just screwed or do you get to keep playing them?

What are the Red Sox needs for this season? Pitching?

Is it possible for the Cubs to pull off a Dustin Pedroia deal.

Since Pedroia is now a second baseman he fills a need for the Cubs.

Hill/Ohman or Hill/Wuertz for Pedroia. If Boston feels they need a second baseman in the deal since Loretta is a free agent after the season(I think), they Cubs could add either Theriot or Fontenot and the RedSox would add another minor leageur to the deal.

Hill/Wuertz or Ohman/Theriot or Fontenot for Pedroia/another minor leaguer

However, I'm guessing the Cubs feel that they have a second baseman in Neifi once Walker is officially gone.

Hmm, I'd be surprised if more than one of those deals goes down. Those three teams don't have the wants the sellers desire, so they would really have to sell low for any of those to go down.

Take the power out of the equation. Since last homerun derby, Abreu has been more of a doubles hitter, as evident since last ASB Abreu has MORE doubles, 45, then HRs, 14. And if Abreu can't hit the homeruns, he certainly ain't worth the contracthe got. His contract was built around the fact that he would be a ALL-AROUND player, yet his over-the-fence or lackthereof, is quite disturbing. I mean, he get's on, at an outstanding pace, he hits fair amount of doubles, but without the homeruns, he is quite abit overrated. With that said...with his contract, and decline of his over-the fence- power, I wouldn't trade for Abreu. I would rather go after the guy in REDs, whose name won't be mention.

Huh? Minnesota and Detroit definitely have enough to get a deal done. As do the Yankees, if they wanted to trade Hughes and/or Tabata.

i'd rather have lee continue to hit in miller park and the rest of the NL central. and if soriano's going to be traded, i'd rather it be to a better hitter's park than detroit, though that lineup would offer him better run/rbi chances.

i think you're screwed if you're in an NL only league and you have one of them.

This is the 3rd or 4th time (not on this board but overall) that I've heard the Red Sox are trying to work out a three-team deal. I'm very curious as to what other teams they are trying to involve.

If Lee goes to Minn, those who want to sign him in the offseason would likely be happy. Minnesota doesn't seem like a team that is going to shell out big bucks for Lee.

It was a pleasure doing business. :)

well, it wouldn't be like i'd regret the trade if he went to detroit. he's obviously fared ok in rfk, so i wouldn't expect a huge drop off in detroit.

my worst case scenario would be the nats signing him to an extension.

WFAN out of NYC reported that the Yankees made an offer for Abreau and that the Phillies asked for Melky and Hughes in return.

I guess Cashman says he won't trade both AND take money on.

This is a classic trade situation. The Phillies obviously want as much as they can get for Abreau, but they're willing to trade him BECAUSE of his salary. Everyone in baseball knows that, so why is anyone going to give them top tier prospects? Doesn't make sense.

And from what I hear Abreau wants his option picked up AND and extension.

No thanks!

Abreu shows all the signs of a rapidly declining player. When all you do is walk, and you've stopped hitting HRs, pitchers stop walking you and then you have no value and a $15 million contract. See Willlie Mays '71-'72, Gary Matthews '84-'85, and Toby Harrah '86-'87(or '85-'86).

What's with this "all he does is walk" crap? He's still hitting .280, higher than all but 3 Cubs, and has 35 XBH, more than all but 2 Cubs.

I see your point, but his OBP is over .400. Even if he hits only 20 HRs a year, what's the big deal? ARam and Lee will both hit 30 every year. That sounds like enough power.

i will take this time to point out that abreu's power numbers aren't "rapidly declining". he's never been a guy to hit a ton of home runs. what he does is hit line drives.

oh yeah, and he makes pitchers work hard, but we're the cubs, we just want guys who "put the ball in play" no matter what the cost.

I agree with sulley - I think people got the wrong idea about Abreu after he mashed in the HR derby last year.

He's never hit more than 31 HR's for a season (2001). And he hit only 20 HR's in both 2002 and 2003 -- despite playing in all but five games over those two seasons.

But the guy hits doubles like there's no tomorrow.

Please, Mr Hendry, figure out a way to trade for him before the Cardinals do.

(I get a kick out of the fact that his middle name is Kelly: Bob Kelly Abreu.)
