I voted AC/DC because (a) I like them, and (b) I still do not consider the Beatles to be a rock band, but more of a rock/pop hybrid.

Seriously, they quite literally are one of the first rock groups ever. When they formed in 1958, nobody was doing that stuff. If you look at their early history playing in the strip clubs in Germany for 2 years, you'd definitely consider them a rock band. Pop bands don't spit on audience members, drink beer and get drunk on stage, get in fights with each other and/or audience members, smash guitars, urinate on nuns (John), or simulate sex acts onstage. Hell, they were virtually (George literally was) deported from Germany for their antics. They really had to tone down their act a WHOLE lot to make them more marketable. To not classify them as a rock band, I think is a real travesty. How were they any different than the Rolling Stones? Do you consider the Stones to be pop? The Beatles invented distortion for goodness sakes.

Concerning their music, I'm still surprised you wouldn't consider them a rock band. Haven't you heard "Happiness is a Warm Gun", "Yer Blues", "Helter Skelter", "I Want You (She's so Heavy)", or "While my Guitar Gently Weeps"...to call that stuff "pop" would be like calling Zepplin "pop"

I just bought "Revolver" the other day and have been listening to it nonstop. This is just about the easiest decision of the tournement for me.

(already have Sgt. Pepper's and Abbey Road too, what should I go for next?)

Rubber Soul!!

Closely followed by The Beatles (white album).

Ole Miss I think musically there is no doubt that the Beatles were Rock. What has been metioned about them being Pop though may have been some of their earlier lyrics. She Love Me yeah yeah yeah. I still say they were lyrically subdued until the Rolling Stones threw a nastier streak into the mix. I dont mean to diss the Beatle I certainly think they are great. You are right on about Revolver, I think it is a great Album. I think what is truly amazing is just how influential both of the Beatles and Stones were how rock music was radically changed after they came into being. Even that being said until the Beatles radio was getting dominated by the likes of Perry Como. Say what anyone wants about them but their music, showmanship and charisma changed music. If you really listen and do away with studio tricks and technical advancements it really hasnt changed a lot since them.

this likely begins my run of voting against the beatles. i don't know the future matchups or anything, but im voting based on who i'd like to sit down and listen to, and the beatles are going to lose out to a pretty hearty number of the bands remaining for me.

Yeah, I'd have to agree.

In Beatles-ish news, I'm going to see The Cast of Beatlemania tonight. I saw them last year and they were fantastic. They play the songs in more or less chronological order, starting in Ed Sullivan era costumes, then changing to Rubber Soul suits, Sgt. Pepper clothes and finally Let it Be era gear. There are four guys in costume, plus one guy in the back who plays synthesizers, filling in all the strings, brass, or whatnot for the songs. The songs are spot on and the guy who plays John sounds EXACTLY like him. Definitely see them if they come your way: http://www.moptops.com/home.html

Good set list. It's a shame nobody ever at least attempts to play "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"...I understand it's a difficult song, but c'mon.

The last Beatles tribute band that I saw performed at a local bar around Ole Miss a few months ago, I walked out after a few minutes because I just couldn't stand the fact that their "Paul" was playing right-handed. That's a travesty really. The guitar "V" that was created when Paul stood next to George or John is signature.

check out the "video" section of that website and you'll see a nice montage of them singing. Paul plays lefty too of course!

Their John is definitely the best of the group. Lennon's voice was so great because it was so unique. It's hard to capture that. You'll enjoy that show alot I bet.

For some humor...check out their music video of "We Can Work It Out", it's sorta famous because they are obviously all high as kites. They had just gotten into dope around that time and all of the writings seem to suggest that they were high 24/7.

The crowning achievement and what I consider to be so ground breaking about "Revolver" is that literally every single song sounds completely different from the rest. All 14 tracks.

Next you should go for Rubber Soul...it was when the boys became men. Deep and introspective songs on there such as "Nowhere Man" or "In My Life" were unheard of at that time among pop groups. I think it may be my favorite album of theirs.

By the way, if you like "Revolver", you should check out their song "Rain" which was recorded during the Revolver sessions and released as a single. It's often cited as the most overlooked Beatles' song.

I love Ringo's drumming on Rain. Widely regarded as his best work, and I agree.

Indeed, I think his drumming on "Rain" is second only to a really unknown Beatles tune called "It's All Too Much", where he really goes nuts.

Which is actually a pretty nice song, as well - I never understood why it was so overlooked. I can see why "Rain" has relatively little mass appeal, but "It's All Too Much" is, while certainly not their best work, one that I enjoy.

And I second all the votes for Rubber Soul. It was the first cd I ever had (yes, I got it on cd), and I listened to it over and over and over again. Some of my very favorites are on there, including "Norwegian Wood" which is the song that first got me really into the Beatles.

I know someone else already said it, but the White Album should probably come next, if not before Rubber Soul.

Their earlier stuff is, in my opinion, far less interesting, but still pretty durn good. Beatles For Sale is one of my favorite early ones, although a lot of people don't like it much. I would stay away from Meet The Beatles. It's their worst album - by far - in my opinion.

Help and Hard Day's Night were released right before they really started going off the hook with Revolver and Rubber Soul, and you can hear them really coming into their own as musicians, so I recommend those as well.

In short, I recommend pretty much all of them. Sorry for the treatise.

A Hard Day's Night LP is I think their best LP as far as showing the music of their "Beatlemania" days.

I'm in agreement with you as regards "Beatles for Sale". While it is significantly weakened by the fact that almost half the songs are covers (a result of them being forced to make the album in a month's time and not having songs ready), it is strengthened by GREAT songs such as "No Reply", "Eight Days a Week", and "I'm a Loser".

And yes, other than "Meet the Beatles", all of their LP's are amazing.

It's over, and it should never have been this close. The Beatles showed some weakness here and could be ripe for an upset. Are they guaranteed a Final Four spot? Stay tuned...
