Toronto is the team that has been most linked to Julio Lugo in the past week. They seem most desperate to add a SS. When the Giants agreed to pick up Shea Hillenbrand (and his remaining salary), it freed up enough dollars for the Jays to take on Lugo's remaining salary. But will Tampa trade him to Toronto? That is the question - will Tampa be satisfied with Toronto's prospects? I have no idea - I am sure one of you can educate us all on the Blue Jays' system. The Mets have been rumored as well - they'd move Lugo to 2B.

I started looking at other contenders besides Toronto, who might be willing to look at shortstops at the deadline. 5 teams jumped out: Boston, the White Sox, Oakland, Houston and Colorado. Phil Rogers had a Tejada to Houston rumor this morning. But what about the Red Sox, White Sox, A's and Rockies - could they position themselves to trade for Lugo?

And in that case, is there an angle for Hendry to deal Neifi to Toronto?

If the Cubs picked up most of Neifi's salary in 2007, would Ricciardi make the trade (returning a low level prospect)?

While I would deal Neifi for a used jock strap, I fear Hendry feels he is valuable and wants him around for next season.
Yes. we all know that that is how Hendry feels.. and if used correctly I would be fine with that.

Selected shortstops by VORP:

Gonzalez BOS 8.2

Uribe CHW 0.1

Crosby OAK -2.3

Perez CHC -4.9

Adams TOR -5.9

Everett HOU -7.0

Barmes COL -11.2

Blecchh! Neifi actually could be a (small) upgrade for Toronto and Houston. Colorado is deep in infielders and might bring up Ian Stewart to play short instead of making a trade.

I'd take Boston out of the mix too personally. Their real need right now is starting pitching and if they make a deal I'm guessing it will be for that.

They've been more than happy with Alex G. at SS this year and they're also quite pleased to have Cora backing him up. Lugo would be an upgrade offensively, but they really built this year's team on defense and it's been superb for the most part - I'd be really surprised if they broke up the infield.

Small upgrade? Microscopic is more like it. Not even close to being worth $2.5 million per season.

Why move Stewart off 3rd when they can just promote Tulowitzki? Tulo is having a much better year.

This occured to me last week when the Jays made John Macdonald their starting shortstop. The Jays have stated publically that they wanted a defensive shortstop hence Macdonald who may actually be worse than Neifi. The Jays have enough oomf in the rest of their line up to carry a weak stick at SS. I don't know how the two compare defensively. I'd have called Riccardi by now but then again I'd also not have Neifury seemingly starting 3 out of every 4 games. (showcasing for a trade???)

I hate to use hyperbole, but we should trade Neifi for anything if the other teams picks up Neifi's salary next year. 2 of the crappiest, most non-projectable minor leaguers is fine with me

So, essisentially what we got for Williamson.

I understand completely.

Yes, and we'll be watching your posting activity to ensure you comply, both now and with future deals.

But I agree completely, we should trade Neifi for whatever we can get.

in 04, the cubs were the only team that wanted Neifi.

I doubt anything has changed since then.

If anything he is less desirable now. He's 33 years old, his range isn't what it used to be, and his contract is hideous. If nobody wanted him in 2004 it's pretty hard to imagine anybody wanting him now.

Uribe is better than that VORP gives him credit for.

His number of RBIs is staggering considering his average and his playing time.

Uribe is an every-day player. And his RBI totals are so high, b/c he plays on a high-powered offensive team.
