Probable Starters:

Iowa: RHP Angel Guzman (3-4, 4.01 ERA, 58.1 IP, 66/16, 1.20 WHIP) vs RHP Travis Smith (3-4, 5.03 ERA)

Iowa: RHP Jerome Williams (2-4, 4.65 ERA, 62 IP, 33/20, 1.63 WHIP) vs RHP Alan Benes (3-2, 4.93 ERA)

Daytona: RHP Roberto Sotolongo (0-3, 3.86 ERA, 25.2 IP, 20/9, 1.29 WHIP) vs RHP Orlando Trias (10-5, 3.51 ERA)

Peoria: RHP Jeff Samardzija (Boise: 1-1, 2.37 ERA, 19 IP, 13/6, 5 HBP, 1.26 WHIP) @ LHP Chi-Hung Cheng (7-5, 3.28 ERA)

Boise: RHP Billy Petrick (4-0, 2.35 ERA, 30.2 IP, 23/12, 4 HBP, 1.40 WHIP) vs RHP Scott Souther (0-3, 4.59 ERA)

Mesa: RHP Jake Renshaw* (0-0, 5.40 ERA, 6.2 IP, 4/3, 1.80 WHIP)/RHP Oscar Bernard (1-3, 3.77 ERA, 14.1 IP, 8/7, 1.88 WHIP)

*Take Mesa's probable starter with a grain of salt as they shuffle their pitchers from the rotation to the pen with frequency.

Angel Guzman is confirmed as a starter per MiLB.com after his bout with dehydration last time out. Jeff Samardzija will make his Peoria debut. Fabian Jimenez Angulo and Joel Santo (acquired from the Padres for Scott Williamson) are expected to join the Chiefs tomorrow in Lansing and be available to pitch on Monday.

Peoria: RHP Jeff Samardzija (Boise: 1-1, 2.37 ERA, 19 IP, 13/6, 5 HBP, 1.26 WHIP)

A few questions about Samardzija.......

How many starts did Samardzija have at Boise?

Overall, how did he look?

Will the promotion to Peoria be troubling? Is this a big jump for him with only a minimal amount of starts at Boise?

Are those 5 HBP very troubling or just attributed to something such as nerves?

How many starts will he be able to get in before he has to report back to Notre Dame?

A few questions about Samardzija.......

5 starts.

Overall, how did he look?

Good, but not great. His FB was in the low 90s (clocked at 92-94 mph in his last start), but had little movement. His slider was much improved from reports around the draft and his change has come along (Samardzija was happy with it).

Will the promotion to Peoria be troubling? Is this a big jump for him with only a minimal amount of starts at Boise?

I don't think it's troubling at all. He probably could have handled starting in Peoria straight from ND, and even if he doesn't do too well, he won't have much time in Peoria so it shouldn't be a big deal.

Are those 5 HBP very troubling or just attributed to something such as nerves?

It's unlikely that it's nerve. He does need to work on his control. Seems like most of the Boise starters have racked up the HBPs.

How many starts will he be able to get in before he has to report back to Notre Dame?

More than likely, 2.

By the way, his next start (and probably last of the season) will be in Peoria next Friday. Just a heads up for folks who might want to see him.

He had 5 starts in Boise and is expected to have 3 starts in Peoria I believe. So far he's been dominating against RH's but LH's have been crushing him.

I thought I saw Nathan saying they were expecting 3 starts from him but maybe my memory is temporarily failing me.

According to that AP article a few days ago, it was "a few more times."

Samardzija Officially Joins the Chiefs[/url]"]The right-handed pitcher out of Notre Dane will make his final two starts of the season with the Chiefs beginning Sunday July 23rd in Lansing, MI and then at O’Brien Field on Friday July 28th.

Nathan said the same thing in the Samardzija thread.

hopefully Billy's last start in Boise!

Next stop Iowa

Actually I think Peoria is a distinct possiblity for Petrick when Samardzija goes back to Notre Dame. I hope. I don't want him at Boise all season.

Nope you didn't. Everything we have put out says two starts. Today and Friday. He will leave Peoria Saturday morning the 29th to go back to South Bend.

oh, Jimenez and Santo are both here already. Santo started Friday (won against SWM) so he wont pitch for a while. Jimenez hasn't started since Monday. He was bumped yesterday when the trade went down. One of them will go to the pen...the other will compete with Estrada to A. start or B. be the long reliever after Samardzija leaves...Should be interesting how Rich and Jody balance 8 starters this week!

With the wins yesterday, the Jaxx are tied with the Smokies for second place in the SL North, 1 game behind the Lookouts.

The next 10 games are crucial to the Jaxx if they are going to be serious contenders for the postseason. The Jaxx play 5 against the Lookouts in Chattanooga and then come home to Pringles Park for a 5 game series against the Smokies.
