I wish the Cubs would do a Marlins. Of course I wouldnt want Hendry involved.

I would. Hendry has shown to be far better at getting trade value than he has at outright signing free agents. 90% of Hendry's major successes as a GM have been in trades.

But what about trading veterans for prospects? The only success so far is Murton, but he wasn't exactly going hard after Murton, and he didn't really trade veterans for prospects. He mostly traded prospects for a veteran and had a prospect thrown in.

From what I can tell, Hendry can do a decent job of trading prospects for established young players. But he couldn't pull off a Marlins deal.

You sure? I could've sworn that I heard that Hendry insisted on Murton.

Murton was sort of an add on when Epstein saw that he could get Mientkiewicz in the deal also.

I thought he picked up Murton when the Expos wanted a prospect that wasn't Murton. Hendry threw in Brendan Harris and said he'd take Murton.

At least that's how I remember it going.

Epstein made the deal with the Cubs and with a tip of the cap to the trading genius of Oakland's Billy Beane, enlisted to additional partners to make it a four way deal. Not only would the Sox get Cabrera from the Expos by sending Garciaparra to the Cubs, but they would also add slick fielding first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz from the Twins by throwing the Cubs a solid minor league hitter, Matt Murton.

I think the whole minor leaguer element is based on the Red Sox need for a 1b since Trot Nixon was injured at the time and Ortiz was viewed as a defensive liability. They could get Mientkiewicz and DH Ortiz.

Disagreed. They have no fan base, and they won't be paying both of these guys next year. Dontrelle mania is over. And if WS titles can't woo the crowd, Willis and Cabrera won't. If they move before next season, maybe they hold on. But I'm almost positive at least one will be traded by next season. DW can make $7-8m next year and MC could make $5-6 easily. I don't see them tying that much into 2 guys when it would pretty much match this year's entire payroll.

Disagree with the disagreed. With revenue sharing no team had less then 110 mil in revenues. Shared revenues and revenue sharing will put 70 mil in their pockets alone. It's not hard for them to make 40 or so on their own. If Willis or Cabrera are traded in the next year, it's not because of finances. It would be that they don't think they can retain them approaching free agency, but that is still a ways off, or someone way overpays..

The Cards would be getting fleeced in this deal. Right now Reyes is their second best pitcher, and if he continues to develop (as he likely will), he'll end up better than Dontrelle.

That being said - go for it!

He's a 6'7" 220lb. right handed pitcher. He's currently pitching for the Springfield Cardinals of the Texas League and is 7-3 3.98ERA 16G 16GS 95IP 99H 44R 42ER 12HR 27BB 61SO

Alittle more info here:

Stuart Pomeranz, SP: Big Stuart Pomeranz is a good pitching prospect due to his mid-90s fastball and control. The 6-7 right-hander was a second round pick in 2003 out of high school, and he posted a 3.55 ERA in Low-A last season at age 19. If he is able to develop a better out-pitch, he could project as a number two starter.

ETA: 2007

I don't think Willis is going anywhere. The Mets were all hot and bothered for him a couple of weeks ago (and their fans still are) but were basically told "Willis ain't a goin' nowhere."

Agreed. The Marlins have said they WANT to build around Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera for the foreseeable future. Rather that future is in South Florida (doubtful) or at a new location (most likely), the Marlins would be WISER to keep Dontrelle, and not run off the little fan support they do have.

This is just wishful thinking on the Cardinals part, cause they are SO DESPARATE for pitching.

Disagreed, Goony. They do have a fan base, but said fan base is abit on the bitter side, because EVERYTIME they would come out and support a winner, a firesale is looming very soon. It's the "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me" theory. If the Marlins could get a long-term leasing, and a NEW staiudm, the fan base would come out of hiding. It doesn't help that in the short term of the franchise, the Marlins had a couple of owners, who wasn't EXACTLY thinking of the long-term stability of the club. If they did, maybe people would know that the Marlins have a fan base.

Two world series championships in seven years - wow, those fans have absolutely nothing to be bitter about.

Not that I'm not disagreeing with you Northside; I don't even know any Marlins fans. Just pointing out the obvious incongruity ... Marlins fans being upset about personnel changes, give me a friggin break.

The Cards fans I talked to were split on this rumor, but the more knowledgeable ones hated the trade.
