Obviously this is a pretty big couple weeks for Hendry to push the team back to being competitive next year.

I just want to get some discussion on 2 players that I would really like to see the cubs go after--I have heard there is interest in one, but have not heard any about the other. Personally, I just think these are two players that would probably be attainable with some of the guys we have to offer at the deadline.

1) Wilson Betimit...I have not heard any mention of him being moved, but I would sure love to know what it would take to get him and either play him at short and Cedeno at 2nd or vice-versa. I really think this guy is about to explode as a player but I dont know if Atlanta has room for him.

2) Willy Mo Pena....I read that the cubs have shown interest in him and that would be very exciting to me. I think he is a young power hitter who could be had for some bullpen help.

I would like to hear everyone else's thoughts on these 2 and know if anyone thinks that either or both could be a possiblitly.

Living in St, Louis and watching the Braves pound the Cardinals the last 2 days (at least there is some small enjoyment for me this baseball season), I was thinking that Betemit would be a great guy to get who could be available. Atlanta doesn't have anywhere to put him right now, but he can play 2B, 3B or SS and their bullpen is a shambles. They had a huge lead last night and left Hudson in longer than necessary because of it. I think Williamson plus a prospect might get it done with the price of relief pitching apparently what it is.

I'm less enamored with Pena, and Boston gave up a solid starting pitcher to get him. I think the player cost may be more than it's worth.

I'd hardly call a pitcher with an ERA at 4.51 and a 1.30 WHIP "solid". Yes, this year he has been great and "solid" but they traded Arroyo when he had those previously mentioned stats and was not "solid". Nobody expected him to have a year like this at age 29. I also don't think it will last, but that's just my personal opinion.

I'd love to see a trade for WM Pena. I think one of our relievers and a decent prospect would get it done. I'd also love to see a trade for Betemit. Once again, I think one of our relievers and a decent prospect would get it done.

Wily Mo is a poor man's Glenallen Hill.

Does that mean he only hits the ball 400 feet instead of 500?

But really, what happened to his power this year? Only 4 dingers in 112 AB, playing in Fenway? His average is great but IsoD is still only 0.050.

I'd pass on WileyMo but I love the idea of Betemit. What would a fair trade be - what would Atl want? Am I dreaming to think Ronny + Marshall might get their attention?

I've never seen him park one on a rooftop, if that tells you anything. Honest to , the first time I saw Wily Mo, the first thing I thought was "how the hell does Glenallen Hill have a kid this old".

Apparantly, chicks dig the long ball...even at an early age.

Or how about Willy Aybar of the Dodgers? They have Dewitt/Guzman/Mueller/LaRoche at third base in the org, and Kemp/Either/Drew/Repko/ in the OF, I think Aybar can be attainable in the Maddux deal.

2) Willy Mo Pena....I read that the cubs have shown interest in him and that would be very exciting to me. I think he is a young power hitter who could be had for some bullpen help.

And how about Victor Diaz? I think the Cubs could get this young man for Walker. The Mets will re-sign Floyd, and have Beltran, IMO have Lastings (who they should keep) Milledge, and Xavier Nady. I think Diaz can be available. And a perfect compliment to Jones in LF.

I would like to hear everyone else's thoughts on these 2 and know if anyone thinks that either or both could be a possiblitly.

I'm not enamored with Pena, and Boston can keep him. And I would be intrigued with Betemit, but I have the feeling that ATL would rather trade Renteria and/or Giles to open up a spot for Betemit. So, my guess Betemit ain't available. But I do believe Victor Diaz and Willy Aybar would be a nice young guys to get at the deadline.

I'd probably rather have Pena than Diaz, but I wouldn't complain about getting Diaz. Pena's shown quite a bit of power already at the big league level. Obviously, there is some work to be done on his plate discipline. Pena has been adequate when playing CF, whereas I think Diaz is primarily just a corner OF (please correct me if I'm wrong on that). I think they are only a little over a month apart age-wise.

I agree that Atlanta is more likely to deal Giles than Betemit. Either of them would look good as a Cub. No objection to Aybar.

Bring on any one of those guys (including Giles). At least one of the Giles brothers would be on the Cubs. :D

I would like Betemit, Aybar, Pena, etc,...
