Oh god, my favorite band of all-time is seeded lower than one of my least favorite of all-time. Thank God it's not even close.

I remember the first time I heard the Smashing Pumpkins. My friend was listening to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness on the bus and he let me listen. I fell in love. I borrowed that 2CD album and rocked out to it for days, taping it to a cassette before giving it back. Then I found Adore, Gish, and the beautiful Siamese Dream. 7 years later, I'm still obsessed. I have exactly 500 of their songs (live, covers, bootlegs, demos, released, unreleased, etc.) on my computer, including some greats like the Mashed Potatoes Box Set, Billy's Gravity Demos, MCIS Demos, the final show at the Metro, the show before at the UC, tons of stuff. This band got me through lots of hard times, and I've never forgiven myself for not seeing them live. Thankfully, I should get another chance. I still think Machina is one of the most underrated albums of all-time. It's definitely not their best, but the replay value is fantastic. Tons of great songs on there.

Also, if you like their solo work, Melissa Auf Der Maur's solo album, "Auf Der Maur" is solid, and James Iha's "Let It Come Down" is absolutely fantastic. Billy's "The Future Embrace" is also solid, but his unreleased song "Tilt" is probably better than anything else on the CD. I've never listened to Jimmy Chamberlain's "Life Begins Again," but I'm trying to get ahold of it.

Anyways, I'm rambling, I apologize.

i didnt like Billy's solo stuff as much as his early SP work

oh and they should start touring around Novermber from what i hear.

I don't either, but IMO, Billy's solo stuff is still solid.

I like Some Devil better than any DMB stuff. The violin and sax get a bit tired after awhile

I love the violin. Boyd Tinsley is great. The sax isn't too overpowering or anything and I enjoy how it blends in. I really like Some Devil a lot though. It's a lot of slower music, but it's good if I'm in that kind of mood. I think DMB is a lot better live than studio. As previously mentioned, give the Live at Luther College CD a listen. You shouldn't be disappointed.

I have the Live in Central Park CD. That about covers all my DMB needs

Absolutely. They are a live band. The studio recordings take away everything great about the band and are only a shell of what the band is.

I'd be curious to know how many of the people that have voted for the Pumpkins have actually seen DMB live and/or know that there is so much beyond the surface of their radio hits. Seems like lots of people here dislike DMB based on their opinion of other people that are fans of the band instead of making up their mind after actually listening to them theirselves.

I can repsect different tastes in music but to vehemently hate DMB is just unbelieveable to me. I mean, I don't like Crash (Into Me) that much but I am aware that it isn't their only song! Too each their own though. 8)

I think it's quite snobbish of you to insinuate that those who voted for the Pumpkins just aren't informed enough about DMB's greatness. I've listened to a ton of DMB at one time or another. I've never seen them live, but I haven't seen 90% of the bands in this poll live. Well, probably more than that actually. I find this kind of attitude in a lot of DMB die hards. I've got a couple friends that are incredulous when you turn down a chance to see them in concert or don't participate in a proverbial circle jerk when discussing the band. I think they've made some nice music. They aren't anywhere close to a rock band, however, and they aren't the greatest band in the world. They have a fantastic effect on the young ladies and are a perfectly suitable band to listen to on a camping trip or bonfire of some sorts. I like SP better.

I agree it's a little out there to suggest you need to have seen a band live before you have the right to dislike them...

The "you have to see them live" argument was stolen from the Grateful Dead and Phish fans

I don't think he really meant it that way. I think he's just saying that a lot of people don't ever give DMB a chance because they are turned off by their fanbase. I completely agree with that. Obviously not all people are like that (and not all that voted for SP) but a lot are. I have plenty of friends who rip on Dave Matthews and have never heard a song other than Crash or Where Are You Going or some other radio pop song. Also, they're not as good of a studio band. A lot of their greatness comes from their improv at live shows. That's why he said you should see them live. Obviously if you don't like their music, you wouldn't go to a concert, but I just find there are too many people that dislike them for no apparent reason other than to be rebels against "those college frat guys that use it to get in girls pants"

Or maybe they've listened to plenty of the music and have formed their own opinion.

if any band stakes their reputation on the fact that they are great live and mediocre in the studio, then they should only ever put out live albums.

I'm not trying to make anyone agree with my opinion or anything like that. I really don't care if you like them or not. Just reading through this thread, it seemed a lot of people hate them based mainly on their fanbase and not on their music. I also have many friends who are that way. Obviously there are a ton of people who have heard a good amount of their music and it just isn't their taste.

I would argue that people who hate the fan base also won't go to the live shows, as it would require milling about with said fan base

To be fair, Grateful Dead and Phish shows were so much different b/c of the jams. You can't really capture that on a studio album. Maybe that's the point IMOY was trying to make, but I've never considered DMB a "jam band" in the same sense as Phish or the Dead.

In addition, let's not take this "you can't say you don't like someone if you haven't seen their show" and equate it to a Dead or Phish fan (like me) saying "if you really want to appreciate this music, you should see it live."

If you're not a fan of jamming, you probably weren't going to be moved by a Phish show. So if you say, I hate jam bands, I'm not going to say "you can't hate Phish if you haven't seen them live." I'd probably just say "you have every right to be wrong."

Not trying to pick on you in particular Derwood, just sticking up for my boys (who got SHELLED in the first round).

Record labels tend to not like that.

I agree with the DMB live stuff. I like their studio recordings, but it doesn't even come close to their live performances.
