I keep wondering why Dierker and Johnson's names don't get mentioned with the likes of Fregosi, Williams, and Piniella.

Apparently Davy Johnson refuses to be dragged away from his fishing boat.

How healthy is Dierker?

Stone mentioned him the other day as someone who descended from the booth and did a fine job managing, but then said he left due to health issues and made it sound like he was very frail these days.

Posted

I'm not aware of Dierker having any immediate health problems. He did have a seizure in the dugout during the 1999 season, but from what I know he had a full recovery.

He was fired because the Astros felt he couldn't win in the playoffs. For those who want to know more about his philosophy he's written a book about managing called, It Ain't Brain Surgery.

If this is actually true (I'm going to take a wait and see approach too), this is awesome (though I sort of want Hendry to go down with the ship).

The Cubs better be quick this offseason to scoop up Fredi Gonzalez before Dayton and the Royals get a chance.

I agree that I wish I heard these comments from MacPhail instead of Hendry. In that case, we might really clean house. On the other hand, to realize that Baker may finally go is a good thing.

Also, with the Braves season in the crapper, they may go ahead and allow Hendry to interview Gonzalez.

If they go with either, it can't be interim. There has to be a commitment.

I wonder if Girardi is figuring into the debate at all, he supposedly may have an out clause if another managerial position becomes available.

I say we build some stocks in front of Wrigley Field. Dusty, Larry, Gene, and Sarge all get locked up in there while fans get to throw as much rotten fruit and Cubs merchandise at them as possible for 30 days.

Heck, I'd pay good money to chuck a tomato at Dusty.

does anybody else  at Juan 'Porky' Lopez being included in this?? Does he really need to be fired mid-season? Does a bullpen coach have any responsiblity that relates to wins and losses??

from the rogers article...

In Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Jacque Jones, Ronny Cedeno, Murton and perhaps Juan Pierre and Barrett (is it time for him to be a utility man, not a primary catcher?), the Cubs have a nucleus to complement a quality pitching staff—now if they can only keep Lee healthy and find two or three more starting pitchers.

wow...what an idiot.

Isn't that what happened in Montreal? They played him at catcher and third base and he couldn't just focus on one which made it difficult for him.

It's pretty much a lock that Dusty is out, GM's only say that stuff about managers when they are about to fire them.

The next few weeks should be interesting in Cubbie land.

But it does give them the out of making a sacrificial firing, like Rothschild, to spare the rest.

On the other hand, Hendry has treaded water for so long and Dusty defends his coaches so vigorously that it's hard to see this ending without Dusty and his coaches being booted.

Juan Lopez might be surprised at the level of outrage that would occur if he were the only one fired in this debacle.

It's also funny how he includes Jones and Murton in the nucleus.

Can you think of a time when a GM said something like that and the manager didn't get fired? I can't.

While we're trying to push our current manager back into his.

(just had to debut the new sig!)

"Razor Shines"? Awesome.

My recollection is that White Sox fans thought he'd get promoted up a year or two ago, but he had been outspoken about problems in the organization ... or maybe even he just joked about the White Sox not making the playoffs in '04? I'm trying to remember, there was some minor controversy, I'm sure someone else here remembers.

No, but I've had low expectations that have not been met in the past. So I'll wait and see whether anything actually happens.

If he's not gone in two weeks, I'm gonna hate the Cardinals even more. Don't tempt me. I'll do it.

I don't think he is referring to the Cubs currently having a "quality pitching staff". I think he is saying the Cubs currently have the nucleus in terms of position players(the ones he mentioned) now they need to put together a quality pitching staff to complement.

Phil Rogers gets in on the act pimping Razor Shines for the job.

This is the part I like. .

Maybe Shines could help break some bad habits by veteran players while making Wrigley Field a more welcoming place for guys like Matt Murton, Rich Hill and Felix Pie.

Boy isn't it exciting. If we got someone like Shines. We'd see (probably). .

Guzman Pitching

Hill Picthing (maybe?)

Matt Murton in LF

Felix Pie (if Pierre is traded)

and possibly even more young up and comers this year.

Will we though? Isn't some of that on JH? Dusty shouldn't have final say on who is w/ the big club. It's Hendry's fault that Rusch is still on the 25-man while Hill mows down AAA batters.

And I don't want to see Pie anywhere near Chicago this year. Just stay at Iowa and figure it out first, please.
