Murton the running specialist or reason for all things bad?

Holy crap, today was disappointing. Murton brought in for Nevin to pinch run, then pulled so Mabry can BAT??? You really have to question this move, as Murton's splits are better than Mabry's against RHP:

Murton .231/.297/.301

Mabry .208/.291/.247

I know we don't need many more examples of Dusty's ignorance, but he's ruining the team almost on purpose it seems. He has decided that Matt Murton is the cause of this team's problems, while at the same time putting him in for his SPEED, which we all know doesn't slump.

All we have to do now is pray Dusty's head explodes when confronted with the logic of it all. Somehow, I think that Baker, like Neifi, is impervious to release from the Cubs/injury of all kinds.

If he's such a problem, just send him to Von Joshua so he can resurrect the guy's approach and career.

Better still: Bring Joshua to him. Fire Clines and promote Joshua to major league hitting coach.

Lets just swap coaching staffs with Iowa. Joshua is a better hitting coach, Dunn is a better pitching coach, Quade's a better manager....heck whomever their bench coach is probably does a better job than Pole does; lets just clean the house that Dusty built and start over.

What does a bench coach do? (on a real team, not the cubs...)

One thing I would assume is that the bench coach serves as manager if the manager is kicked out or misses a game due to suspension or personal reasons. But, that is not necesarily the case because third base coach Joey Cora takes the helm for the Sox. But, then again it seems they might have a problem with their bench coach, Tim Raines considering they did not offer him a contract extention yet and others received theirs.

Mostly, he helps organize practices and stretching routines pre-game.  He'll also occasionally give advice to the manager for how to handle certain game situations.

really, when (hopefully not if :() Dusty's canned this season, I want to see Dick Pole take over the interim spot at least for a day or two... just so I can hear Ronny say his name on the air a few times :)

Not really...

Bench coaches do no handle pre-game stretching, that is the trainer's job, and its iffy if they even do it much past Spring Training.

Same goes for practices, there isn't time for practices during a 162 game season.

Pole's background is in pitching so I'm sure he works some with the pitchers.

I think it is obvious that Dusty is panicking. His recent interviews, his benching of Murton (still the only position player to be benched this season), the fact that he is going with his guys. It really only shows how bad of a manager he is.

I am actually beyond caring how bad Dusty is and how stupid his moves are. What is really getting to me now is Hendry not only asssembling a bad team, he is not doing much to correct it and blindly still defending a stupid hiring in Dusty Baker. Dusty has done nothing here that has warranted this kind of loyalty. I would contend that Dusty underachieved with the 03 team and absolutely got out managed in the post season. He also got out managed in the 2002 WS.

So basically all of my Cub wrath from now on is going to be directed at Hendry.

Your inability to recognize that Murton can't hit righties and throws like an average high school outfielder is somewhat creepy.

Dusty Baker is an idiot that has countless strikes against them. Not playing Murton more isn't even among the top 30 stupid things he's done as a Cub.

How about the inability to think past today and realize that Murton is young enough to improve, therefore he should be given the chance to face these guys. Murton isn't hitting righties, but he's hitting them better than Mabry. Do you just ignore that fact?

Its really hard to look at the numbers when they tell you one thing clearly, and come up with the complete opposite. Murton has a hard time witih righties, but Mabry is worse! Murton has an average arm at best, but baseball think tank and BP say he is above average in LF this season. He also leads the team in OF assists with 3 (Pierre 0, Jones 1).

I certainly hope you aren't trying to defend the benching of Murton for a defensively atrocious Nevin who will bring little more than a slumping first round pick to the plate. Murton gets a lot of slack with many because we recognize that his potential is high, whereas Nevin is siphoning the last few drops from a gas tank running on fumes already (read: he is old).

People always have this romantic notion of being last year's Braves and playing the kids, but the moment any mistakes are made, its Dusty time, which means Nevin, Perez, Bynum, or any aging veteran who sucks. The season is blown, the year is over. What reason is there to try and salvage a .333 winning % rather than .222%?

Murton's just the next excuse in a litany of cowardice and ignorance, and its not fair to a young player, especially when the decision hurts the team's chances to win!

I could just be imagining it, but it also seemed to me that Murton's slide in production coincided pretty closely with the article that said that Clines and Baker were trying to get Murton to be more aggressive. And there was an article at the end of last season (I forget who wrote it) that demonstrated that Murton was actually getting better against right-handed pitching; i.e., that he was adjusting all on his own. I really do believe that, at least in part, the coaching has had a significant impact on Murton's decrease in production.

I hate this entire coaching staff.
