Close the book on Downs...I wasn't paying very good attention to the score; the Hawks are actually down 7-1 now. All 7 runs are charged to Downs, and only 1 is unearned I believe.

Final Line: 4+ 6H 7R/6ER 3/1 K/BB (not sure on the K/BB, they didn't announce a final one but I think that's all he had).

Now 7-1 in favor of Eugene.

4+ IP, 6 H, 7 R (6 ER) for Downs.

Jake Fox picks up right where he left off in Daytona...2/3 with a HR. If he keeps this up the rest of the year, the Cubs are going to have themselves a legit catcher prospect. He could be a nice addition to this club in a year or two.

As Jakes biggest (or at least loudest for the longest time) fan at NSBB, I'd like to say, "Go Jake!"

How is his defense? I know that when he was drafted he was considered the better hitting prospect, but Richie was the better defensive prospect. It seems to me that he and Rick split the starts at C so that makes me wonder if he's capable of being an everyday C and still produce at his current levels.

Free baseball in Jackson.

Jaxx only have 4 hits through 9, but their pitching has been great tonight. Rapada and Vasquez pitched 3 scoreless innings of relief in the 7th, 8th, and 9th.

By most accounts, he's improved his defense to the point to be at least "average" behind the plate. I don't think he'll ever win any gold gloves, but his hitting would make him well worth the defense. He's a lot like a Michael Barrett right now...an average defender who can hit enough to overlook what he may lack defensively. Definitely enough defense to stick there if the bat holds up.

I think the platooning with Richie (last year and now again in AA) and Rick (this year) is more due to the Cubs trying to get both guys ABs rather than Fox not being able to handle it. Richie is a very good defensive catcher, and Rick was a fairly high (3rd-4th round?) pick out of high school...so neither is going to be sitting the bench everyday. If Fox continues to hit like this though, his value will skyrocket, especially by hitting well at AA.

Jaxx lose :(

Moore had 3 of the 6 hits including the lone RBI, his 12th homer, tonight. Patterson, Jackson, and Cates had the other Jaxx hits.

Boise down 10-4 in the 9th.

MWL All-Star game box: The East beats the West 7-1

1B Ryan Norwood 0/2

RP Mitch Atkins 1 scoreless and hitless IP, 1/1, HBP 15 pitches (9 strikes), 0/2 GO/FO

RP Matt Avery 0.1 scoreless and hitless IP, 1 pitch (1 strike), 0/1 GO/FO

RP Jeff Teasley 1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1/1, 17 pitches (8 strikes), 0/1 GO/FO

RP Ed Campusano 0.1 scoreless and hitless IP, 1 pitch (1 strike), 0/1 GO/FO

Peoria Journal Star"]Peoria's Ryan Norwood, the starting first baseman and No. 5 hitter, grounded out to second in his first at-bat.

Norwood batted with runners on second and third and two outs in the bottom of the third. Facing Kane County's Jason Ray, Norwood flew out to deep center field in his second and final trip to the plate.

"My first at-bat I was doing everything not to strike out," Norwood said. "The second time, I knew it was my last at-bat, so I had fun with it. I thought it had a chance, but I didn't hit it the best I can."

Four Chiefs pitchers combined to allow one run in 22/3 innings.

Peoria starter Mitch Atkins pitched a scoreless second inning for the West. The right-hander hit a batter, walked one and struck out one.

Chiefs right-hander Matt Avery retired the only batter he faced. He got Blanks to foul out near the left-field bullpen to end the fifth.

Another Chiefs reliever, Jeff Teasley, allowed a run in the seventh as the East boosted its lead to 5-1. He struck out one batter in an inning of work.

Chiefs closer Ed Campusano - who flies out of Peoria this morning to join Double-A West Tennessee - got the final out in the top of ninth, when Craig Tatum lined out to center field.

"I threw one pitch," Campusano said. "I wanted to throw more. Some people probably didn't see me."

2B S. Clevenger 1/5, K, E (1, fielding)

RF A. Joseph 2/4, R, RBI, 2B (1)

LF D. Lewis 0/3, BB, R, K, SB (1)

DH R. Episcopo 1/2, BB, RBI

1B R. Canzler 2/4, R, 2 RBI, HR (2), K

3B J. Lansford 1/4, E (1, fielding)

C W. Castillo 1/1

SS M. Matulia 0/3, BB, K

SP D. Downs 4 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 3/1 K/BB, HBP, 5-4 GO-FO

RP A. Maestri 2.2 scoreless, 1 H, 2/0 K/BB, WP, 5-1 GO-FO

The Idaho Statesman"]"The early innings I made some real quality pitches and made some good pitches with my off-speed (pitch) when I had to," Downs said. "And that's what I didn't do in the fifth inning."

Alex Maestri pitched the final three innings, allowing three hits and a run in his U.S. professional debut.

Maestri, who pitched for Italy in the Baseball World Cup last spring, said he didn't pay attention to the score when he entered.

"It was like a debut for me, so I was pretty nervous," he said. "I just thinking the score was 0-0. When you start thinking that it's 10-3, you're not thinking the right way."

Just for you, Outshined:

Canzler added his second home run in as many games in the bottom of the eighth inning with a deep shot over the 400-foot mark in center field. The 6-2, 210-pound first baseman is 5-for-7 so far this season.

Catcher Wellington Castillo joined the Hawks on Tuesday. Castillo is the fourth catcher currently on the team. The 5-foot-11, 196-pound Castillo, 19, was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2004.

Jeff Samardzija is not expected to pitch for 7-10 days while he works on his mechanics (and waits for MLB to approve his contract).
